I had the pleasure of attending an all-day workshop with LaRoy Edwards at Classic Piano in Portland yesterday. We learned that LaRoy will very soon be turning 81!
Quote:

Mr. Edwards joined Yamaha in 1962 as Piano Service Manager and has been an integral member of the Yamaha team ever since. He authored and contributed to many important and lasting training guides and programs. During his tenure as a Yamaha consultant, LaRoy also sold Yamaha acoustic and Disklavier pianos as owner of his own dealership.

LaRoy Edwards created the Little Red Schoolhouse nearly 30 years ago and the program remains the longest running piano technology courses of its kind, providing comprehensive instruction on grand piano regulation to select technicians. Edwards’ extensive technical knowledge led him to help establish the Yamaha piano service department as the best in the industry. He has been teaching classes for PTG, on behalf of Yamaha, for nearly 40 years while writing several articles published by the PTG.

LaRoy is one of the founding members of PTG and has been the recipient of many of the organization’s prestigious awards, including Member of Note for outstanding service to the tuning profession; the Golden Hammer for outstanding service and dedication over many years; and the Hall of Fame for sharing his talents, time, and loyalty to the profession. LaRoy Edwards is considered by many, many technicians to be one of the best instructors in the piano industry.

We all went out for dinner afterward and I had the distinct honor of buying the maestro a beer and enjoying a wonderful conversation. A true gentleman and a scholar, LaRoy's contribution to our craft will be felt for many, many years to come!

Here's to LaRoy!

I agree!! I attended the PTGMARC Convention last month and LaRoy gave a seminar entitled "Where's the Jack?". Excellent presentation. He also showed some really terrific home made tools he owns. Thanks for your contributions La Roy!!

Yes! He's always trying to come up with some new tool or trick to make our lives easier! His grand action caddy is definitely on my wish list right now.

LaRoy also has a terrific sense of humor. I remember during one of his presentations he talked about how nobody but high level technicians can get pianos to work their best and so we should charge accordingly. He started the class out at over $100 and hour and proceeded to ask us some tricky regulating questions. Every time we got an answer wrong he kept lowering our hourly rate, so that by then end we were making about $10 an hour!
