Looks like fun doesn't it?

and it is!

I am studying it currently. It will never sound like that though from my old fingers!

This makes the first version sound rather slow:

An absolutely gorgeous piece IMO.

She plays this piece well, but there are a number of performances of this piece on youtube which are better:

Well, she can play loud and fast, can't she?

I found her playing to be too percussive and almost unpleasant. She is unquestionably well trained and in possession of great technique but there is very little musicality. Granted this piece is tough to interpret. My current favorite is Benno Moiseiwitsch's version. See what you think

Another wonderful piece to add to my learning list.

Nothing against her ability, and it could very well just be the poor sound quality, but that just hurts my ears.

I thought it sounds bad because of the recording quality.

I prefered this performance:

The problem I found was she spent all her focus on the runs and not the melody...

This is what is so great about music. Numerous people have responded with an equally diverse reaction to the performance. This was a rehearsal session she did at the Steinway Hall in Manhattan and, admittedly, the sound quality is less than optimal. Regarding her approach, aside from her obvious technical prowess, I found her passion and attack really exciting. After listening to original recordings of Rachmaninoff playing, I can imagine that he would have approved of the fire in her approach.

Nice one.
This guy also does a fine job. Although he plays it a bit too relaxed. It needs more spark IMO. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W6JW1mHKk8M

I absolutely love this piece. And my favorite is of course the Lugansky version. I've watched it a hundred times and I always get goosebumps when he raises his arms in the air after that last chord. Just... awesome!

Thanks for all the links...I have enjoyed listening to them. Personally, although I greatly admire her technique and speed I find I like this particular piece a little slower with more emphasis on the melody. This, of course, is from a strictly listening point of view as opposed to actually knowing anything about the piece itself. I'm so glad to have been exposed to this particular piece of music and am always impressed by the wide range of knowledge on this forum. Thanks again for sharing.

Thanks to this thread I just started working on it too. smile All the videos are inspirational - especially Lugansky. He and Astanova remind me of my Russian piano teachers, who would be happy to know I am practicing! smirk

IMO, all three of those were considerably better than Ms. Astanova. I found her performance rather monotonous, with some fearfully unrelaxed looking moments towards the end, almost as if her technique was being pushed to the max.

The best recent performance I've heard is from Ryan Brown (of the 5 Browns), alas not on YouTube.

Of the performances on youtube, Dang Thai Son's was the best. Pogo's and Lug's are both very good also, I'm not sure which I prefer-there are some nice ideas in both.

Of all of Lola Astanova's youtube clips, I like her transcription of the Rihanna song the most!
