I know nothing about this Synthogy Ivory I've seen on these boards. I'm assuming you have to have your computer hooked up to your piano in order to use it? Does it 'override' the sound on whatever piano you're playing or does it enhance it? In other words, does the quality of the instrument affect the quality of the sound when using this program?

Just curious...... thanks!

You can turn off the piano speakers if you like.

Synthology (and other synths) generate their own sound from within the PC and feed it to the PC sound card. From there you can feed the sound to speakers.

Synths get their input from your piano keyboard. The piano sends MIDI data, consisting only of keystrokes. The synth software generates the sound from the keystrokes.

That's basically what your digital piano does internally. But you can expect better sound samples in Synthology.

That's what you would expect, and in terms of sample size in Megabytes/Gigabytes it's probably true. But, as a practical matter, mst people with top-end Yamahas or Rolands don't see a huge improvement in sound. Certainly, when you listen to recorded comparisons of the internal and computer-based samples, there doesn't seem to be much difference or improvement. Of course, it would probably be better than a cheap DP's samples.

Yes, although the sound of individual notes from samples may be better, the overall sound from a good DP is more "seamless" than that from samples. Unfortunately, piano playing seldom consists of playing an individual note.

When I listen to (sample) demos on websites, I don't find them completely convincing.

guest, that's one of my favs, too.

I'm still puzzled by the fact that software pianos can sound so much better when they're being played than when they're downloaded after having been recorded. I've had four or five software pianos - currently playing the Best Service Galaxy II Steinway D. When I listen to it thru headphones, it's sensational, which it what you'd expect from a multi-gigabyte piano. I haven't recorded it yet, but if past experience is any indication, it may not sound noticeably better than a contemporary DP's internal sounds.

Make that three on that faves comment. Dem wuz da daze ven dis place was hopping!

Guest or Fogville,

Could one of you post a link to the thread that has proplayer's software samples played through his MP8. I can't find him in the member directory and that's another of my faves.

Fogville,

I have only bought Italian Grand because of finances, but my disappointment in recordings is exactly what you describe.

t-dot, I *think* that you're looking for his post c.2/3 of the way down page 2 of this one: link. If it's not, propianist is listed in the Users Directory.

Re the problems with the recorded sound, the forum to get answers - which will very probably include at least one new app - is NorthernSounds.com. Lots of pro sound producers, including a couple/three award winners and knowledgeable wannabees.

Congrats on the Italian Grand purchase. Just read the specs. Like the una corda inclusion - that's missing even in the full version of the Best Service Galaxy II Steinway D. propianist praised Galaxy for its tweakability, and I definitely agree, but do wish that una corda was included.

Fogville,

That's exactly what I was looking for.

LOL on the congratulations for spending 160 green. But the way things are going for me financially, it's appropriate.

I'll go back to Northern Sounds. Haven't been there in a while.

Thanks
