Hi everyone :),

I need to make a decision soon about whether to participate in a master class in late summer which is hold by my professor. Actually, my graduate study will begin in this fall, and that means I will have chance to have private lessons with my professor this fall.

Before I was admitted by this professor,he once recommended me to join his master class, and I also agree that. However,I met some financial problems recently,so I am wondering to give up or only auditing the master class.

Actually,I am not very familiar with that professor and american culture(I have been in U.S for only two years).I am not sure whether my professor is angry with me or not ? The price for auditing is much cheaper than have lessons in the master class.

Any wise suggestion is appreciated.

I think you should tell the professor that your financial circumstances have changed, and ask him. He should understand, and he might even be able to arrange some financial assistance.

One cannot predict whether or not your professor giving the master class will have a negative reaction to your not attending it and somehow resent you for it later if you wish to study with him, particularly since he invited you to take the master class. In this case I would hazard a guess that it's not a question of culture but of individual personality.

A reasonable person would understand that some students have financial limits that would preclude them from the luxury of participating in a pre-session master class.

Is it possible for you to speak to him or to communicate somehow with him that you could afford to audit the course, but cannot afford to be a paying student in the class? One would hope that he would understand and appreciate that dilemma.

Regards,

I think Bruce is correct.
Whatever you do, communicate with the teacher. If you don't he might think you are blowing it off. If you audit the course, he may note your interest.
