i was checking out some of the big acts in town today and i check this performer's website.. this person was technically impressive, he had a lot of Brad Mehldau stuff in his music... and brad Mehldau is one of my favorite pianists.. but I just couldn't like his music at all.. something about it was just uninspiring and unmusical.. the music sounded like a clone with no musicality, and above all, it just didn't have any heart.

I was also listening to CD of lesser known jazz greats in LA, and although their style was not really my thing, their playing was just so compelling and masterful, it had so much heart..it was very moving experience.

I am sure others here had similar experience.. but i was wondering how do people end up being that way as a clone, with no voice of their own and no heart?? I know people like Kenny Garrett and the clayton brothers stole transcribed ideas from others all the time, people used to call Ray Brown "Ray Pettiford" for the same reason. so I don't think its because you transcribed or copied someone too much.. ultimately you (should) end up finding your own way of doing those things.. I know people who stole a lot of Mehldau stuff, but the way they use them is hip and musical.

it seems like you can develop your technical/harmonic ability at school, but it doesn't guarantee that you will develop your "musical" ability... the ability to make your music sound interesting, fun, the kind of stuff that makes people say "yea!!".

I just want to emphasize the point that the problem is probably not because you copied too much.. or didn't follow your own voice.. most greats I talked to said that your own voice should emerge as you work on things and take ideas.. and Bill Evans even cautions people from being too concerned with "finding your own voice".

A lot of great players have done tons of transcriptions, some can even play along with an entire album, some learned the omnibook in all keys.. they can even play in the style of Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock etc if they choose to, so i don't think you can ever do "too much". I think it has more to do with how you internalize them.
