Hi, this is my first thread.

I am learning to read notes better and currently working on Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata 1st and 3rd movement. (I don't expect to accomplish the 3rd in less than 10 years!!)

My question is... 1st movement Bar 34, 2nd note in the 1st triplet, which is an F sharp, has this 'x' in front of it. The 'x' also appears many times in the 3rd movement starting from Bar #8.

What does it mean?

Thanks ahead of time.

Dina.

"x" Means a double sharp. so an F double sharp is the same as a G natural.

It's a double sharp - You raise the note twice, so that your F becomes a G. Fx = F## "=" G. Music has grammar rules and it's written as Fx instead of G because of one such rule. Fx is known as the "enharmonic equivalent" of G because you play the same piano key and produce the same pitch.
