The 'pulley' ligaments (annular ligaments) are what get stressed in playing. Have you ever considered why the tendons don't just rip out of your hand? Because that's what pulling on them (flexing) makes them want to do, like pulling on a washing line. Interestingly, the picture is from here: http://www.urbanclimbermag.com/.

I always marveled at rock climbers! Their whole body dangling from their fingers. I went to a museum display where they had taken donated bodies and "plasticized" them so that you could actually see these things inside of us on a real body. It was fascinating. The thing that surprised me the most about the finger was that the tendons in the tip of the finger would pass through another flexor tendon attached at the 2nd joint of the finger. This also prevents the first flexor from "detaching" from the bone when contracted.

Is all our strength located solely in the index finger of the left hand, then?
