I have a problem with my left 5th finger.
On the outside of it, I feel pain.
It has been over 2 weeks since I got this pain.
I've been waiting without playing the piano but still feel pain on it.
I'm dying to practice the piano but I'm just staring at the piano lid.
Does anyone know what I should do for healing?
Maybe, should I take any medicine?
I'm new here so I don't know where I'm allowed to post this.:(
It would be great if you have a good idea.Thanks.

ps: I got this pain practicing Canon in D.

Welcome to the forum!

I'll make the blanket statement that you should never feel pain when practicing. It usually indicates some combination of too much tension, bad technique, or these coupled with overuse. It's hard to diagnose the problem over the internet and I assume you're doing the standard rest/ice/anti-inflammatory routine. If it's not responding and you're still feeling pain two weeks later, without playing and assuming there's no other activity you do that's causing it or making it worse, it's time to go see a doctor.

Good luck! It's frustrating when you want to practice and can't.

I have nerve damage and circulatory problems with my hands(diabetes), so I usually always have some pain or discomfort when playing, especially the first 10-15 minutes. After I warm up, it usually lessens a bit. If it doesn't, or gets worse, I know it's time to stop. That said, if you have no known issues with your hands(or even if you do), I would caution you to stop playing when you feel pain. Give your hands the rest they need to avoid injury. Listen to your body. You need your hands if you want to play. Do all you can to protect them. If you stop playing and the pain persists, see a doctor. I would also suggest several short practice sessions a day(15-20 minutes max) instead of marathon sessions, especially if you're new to playing. Give your fingers and hands time to develop the nescessary strength to play without injury.

Thanks for your all reply.
Yes I better get an elastic bandage for protection of my finger.
It would be great if I can practice even only a few mins a day.

I guess it's probably from poor hand posture.
I haven't played the piano for about 20 years
and it has been about only 3 months since I got a new piano.
And I tried to challenge too hard sheet music from the first.

I stopped playing the piano after finishing Fur Elise when I was young. Which piano text book could be good for me? Would you please recommend a good one? Thanks a million!:)

What sort of pain is it? I agree with the other posters that there should be no pain from playing piano. Is the pain a topical problem or deep in the finger? You could be pressing too hard on the keys. Remember you only need to press down to the keybed and then let off the pressure as you hold the note, only pressing it enough to keep the key down. Once you've pressed the key all the way down, there is no more pressure you can add to change the sound. I'm just guessing as to what the problem might be, but try to not play as loudly and see if that helps.

Welcome, minipiano! smile

It's frustrating to not be able to play when you want to. frown But it's important not to aggravate an injury and make it worse. I recommend playing one hand only, or playing something else besides Canon. If at any point you feel pain, you should hold off.

I don't know how to explain the painful part of my finger,
so I drew hand picture with a mouse on photoshop.

I feel pain when I press this part slightly with my other finger.
I think it could be a tendon or joint problem but honestly not sure.
It feels like a pressing pain.
The pain is not coming from deep inside of my finger I can feel.
I feel the pain on a little bone of my finger.
Not sure it's a joint or a bone.:(

Thanks for the good tip.
I'm going to see a doctor next week.
I probably better see a doctor and get any physical therapy.
It has been over 3weeks since I got damaged.
