Since I've been playing a digital for the past 11 years I'm a bit out of touch with the acoustic world. I'm considering replacing my current digital with an acoustic and don't even know where to start. Are there some real 'stand out' names that are known for their beautiful tone and easy tuning? What are some other things that I should be watching for? I definitely need to keep it under $5000 and most preferably in about the $3000 range.

Thanks!

I think you should think about a new piano. The asumption tends to be that for the same money you can get a better used piano than new and I'm just not sure this is true.

A slightly used piano, say one that's less than 5 years old, may be just about like new but the savings in that case would probably be minimal. If you're going to get something older, it may show signs of wear and tear which would be disappointing. If you get something really old, it may well require a great deal of work which is going to cost money so, again, you haven't really saved all that much.

There are some decent new pianos available out there in the 3-5K range. I just bought a Perzina for 6K (Canadian) which I'm quite excited about but there is also Kawai, Knabe, Petrof. I would do some research - there's no substitute for playing things and finding out what you like.

Also, get Larry Fine's Piano book. Lays it all out in black and white. (I'm not Larry Fine by the way!!).

I agree with everything Jnob said except about the price of pianos less than 5 years old. Used piano prices have taken a big dive in the last year. But even before that the prices on newer used pianos reflects the huge depreciation that happens in the first few years of new piano ownership. I would shop around and see if you can find any good used studio uprights for a good price. keep us posted..... Larry

This 2000 Baldwin Hamilton for $500 in NJ on ebay looks like it could be a good deal - what do you guys think? If not, which dealer should we all go to so we can get a better deal (as in a better piano for the same price, or a similar piano for a lower price)? If I was in NJ, or if the piano was in southern CA (and if I had a place to put it) I would likely take it myself. It includes a Dampp Chaser system, too.

"...I'm considering replacing my current digital with an acoustic and don't even know where to start..."

For a cold start (sorry--- it's not a Canada joke) you might try http://www.ptg.org , Piano Technician's Guild, and see if you have any techs listed near where you live. Call 'em up, tell them what you're looking for, ask if they know of anyone selling a piano or if there are local dealers they like.

It's a place to start. Then there's the Yellow Pages; start looking at dealers. There's an education right there.

Leads will come up, you'll get a clearer idea what you want and who you want to deal with (and the reverse). It takes some footwork, but if you let this process unfold, next thing you know 'your' piano will be sitting there in your music room.

It's the force of destiny at work... you've just got to give it a little something to work with.

ebay makes me nervous - if savings is a major factor for you then okay, this may be the way to go. But it's possible to tune up a real piece of junk so that it will sound and feel good enough during a cursory inspection. You'll want to get a pro to look at it which will cost another $100 at least. But this is money well-spent: a piano that can't hold its tune or that has lousy action can really turn you off playing. I may have dismissed used pianos too quickly but just be careful and take your time.
