...Elijah Bossenbroek.

He started a thread yesterday on the pianist corner urging people to go to his website and offering free sheet music for one of his pieces, "A Song of Simplicity."

The thread didn't last long (others thought it was too much self-promotion), but I fortunately saw it before it got vaporized, and as I am sucker for sheet music--especially free sheet music--I checked it out. His music is very beautiful and reminds me a lot of Einaudi, and even more of Josh Winiberg. (Those of you who frequent the Einaudi forum will be familiar with Josh.)

Anyway, if you go to his website, you can click on a streaming player to listen to some of his pieces. If you want the sheet music for "A Song of Simplicity," click on "Contact Us" and say you heard about it on PW. He'll ship the pdf to you.

Great piece but I would hardly call that simple!! A little above my station I think, besides, must concentrate on current projects smile

I got the sheet music and it looks a lot easier than it sounds... and it shares a lot of the hallmarks of Einaudi's music (ostinato bass arpeggio patterns, etc.). But the snag will be getting it up to tempo, especially the middle part. eek

He posted the link in the non-classical forum too and I thought you would enjoy the music Monica. I do. Mark, I found the music started automatically when I followed the link this morning, but doing so again I have multiple versions of Simplicity, all playing slightly out of sync. Weird!

Bossenbroek? Where have I heard that name before? Doesn't his family make a famous line of German pianos or something? wink

Anyway, I like his music and thanks for the introduction thumb

But, who's this Einaudi you mentioned in your topic title? confused

Regards, JF

Yeah... I sat down and tried to play through it last night. Hmmm... I may have to revise my earlier assessment that it "looks easier than it sounds." Plus the dynamics are key; if you don't accent the notes exactly as indicated you lose the melody.

I'm leaving Monday for a vacation so won't be able to tackle it in earnest until I get back.

Yay! I got the sheet music!

OK, friends, please tell me where I need to post the following question:

I am a beginner. I understand basic rhythm and timing. I emphasize BASIC. As in, I only recently learned about 6/8 time. So, what do I do with 5/4 time, or 12/8 time? Put away the music for the next decade??

You can post a separate in the this forum, Adult Beginner Forum (ABF) to generate more replies. But basically the top number is how many beats per measure and the bottom number indicates what note value gets one beat. So in the case of 5/4, five beats per measure with a 1/4 note getting one beat.

Well, maybe not a decade, ArpeggioPaolo. 12/8 time will be much like 6/8; you just keep counting until 12 instead of 6. wink

I worked on the piece for close to an hour this evening, and I have to say that I'm finding it a challenge. And that middle part where you're setting the metronome for a dotted quarter at 168. Yikes!! eek eek There's a distinct possibility I'll never get that part up to tempo, as I've never played anything that fast before.

But I'm hopelessly hooked on the piece. smile

Hi Monica!!

Oooh, I am going to email and ask for the music too! Have you listened to his other pieces? Anything else that particularly caught your ear?

This piece (A Song of Simplicity) really reminds me of the original theme from the movie The Piano (The Heart Asks Pleasure First). With that piece, dynamics make or break it. And not only hand independence but finger independence is essential! I wouldn't be surprised if A Song of Simplicity looks similar on the page.

On the subject of tempo, the two pieces that I decided to work on with a teacher for the summer are MM (quarter note)= 142 and 138 respectively, and those are easily the faster pieces I've ever played. 168 just sounds frightening!

ShiroKuro, I went ahead and bought both of his albums (they're digital downloads for five bucks each, a bargain, imo). They're both simply excellent. It's hard to single out a particularly noteworthy piece--they're all beautiful---but I'd have to say my second favorite was "I give up." But as far as I can tell he only has sheet music for "Song for Simplicity." It does look a LOT like "The Heart Asks Pleasure First," and I think you're spot on in your analysis. I've been working on the first 3 pages only, and have the notes basically down but am nowhere CLOSE to the required tempo on that wicked fast part. frown

jefferzzz... you're skirting close to blasphemy by saying that you like Elijah's music more than Einaudi. laugh But I agree with you that Elijah is the Real Deal. (p.s. You should also check out Josh Winiberg's music, especially "Tidal" and "Rebirth." It's very similar in spirit and just as beautiful.)

LOL Monica... I know you're a hard core Einaudi fan and I meant no disrespect... I guess everyone has a certain taste and to me, Bossenbroeck was absolutely fascinating to me... I LOVED it... I am going to order both CDs and cant wait to get the sheet-music. ;-)

I LOVED Josh Winiberg too, thank you for that information ;-)
