I have a technical question regarding Steinway action rail flange cloth. Should the cloth strips be provided under both the whippen and hammer shank flanges, or only under the hammer shank flanges, as I have understood it to be? Would there be any advantage to installing it under the whippen flanges? In the Steinway “World-Wide Technical Reference Guide”, cloth is shown in both locations on the model piano action.

Any clarification would be greatly appreciated.

Thank-you.

I hate that cloth! I've never quite understood what's great about it. some sort of abrasive paper makes more sense to me. Maybe someone can clue me in as to why Steinway sticks with that cloth (no pun intended!)

I only see it on the hammer rail and not the wippen rail. All I see are NY Steinways and there is probably 5 or 6 in the shop now.
I assume the cloth is to dampen action noise created by sound transmission from the attack.
It does make it a pain because you have to loosen up the screw and move the flange without twisting the cloth or the hammer creeps back toward the original position.
