Notation Question -- Please Help

Hey, I've recently begun getting back into piano after a seven year hiatus (I played from nine to fourteen and then stopped when I got into high school). I'm working on Moonlight Sonata's first movement and my skills are starting to come back, but I've run into a problem. I'm familiar with sharp, flat, and natural signs, but I have run into what looks like a little x near one of the notes, and I'm at a loss. Could you guys help me out? Much thanks.

That is a double sharp. The note should be raised one whole step.

It's a double-sharp, and raises a note by two semitones (i.e., two half-steps).
An F-double-sharp would be played as a G.

Also... If you see an x with a # symbol, it means it's cancelled and you play the not normally as written.

I don't follow you, John. Isn't that the notation Alkan used for a triple-sharp? Edit: Found it (from Op. 39 No. 10)! Steven
