I just got home from a three day voicing seminar in Toronto. The event was put on by the Canadian Association of Piano Technicians (CAPT) and was billed as "Voicing Boot Camp".

The event was well planned and organized. A "new" method of presentations was explored, which consisted of one day of short and condensed, 20 minute presentations of different aspects of piano touch and tone by different presenters. After each group of three or four "mini-technicals" there was a question period followed by a break. It was a very stimulating way to get a divergence of information in a lively setting.

The highlights of the weekend were two long sessions with master voicers André Oorebeek from Holland and Marc Wienert from New York. André is becoming well known for writing the voicing manual called "The Voice of the Piano" and Marc's resume includes the voicing work for the Zenph releases of the "re-performances" of the Glen Gould Goldberg Variations. Marc also figures in the Grand Obsession book.

Both master voicers showed their approaches to tone regulation, which are entirely different. It was very illuminating.

Rounding off the weekend was a three hour long evening session with Jack Brand, the person who arguably knows more about piano hammer felt than anyone alive. He not only gave us a power point tour through the Wurzen felt factory, he also brought along bundles and bags of felt samples to examine, scratch & sniff, and even take home.

I think every participant of the well-attended conference came away equipped with techniques to improve and speed up their work as well as with new inspiration and motivation to fuel their quest for good piano tone.

Wow, Jurgen, that sure sounds like a provocative event. I've been to a class with Marc Wienert here in NYC and, of course, have read (and thoroughly enjoyed) Andre's book and CD but the length of time and format of the Toronto event sounds like a "Best of Kind" happening. So when is it coming to New York?

Sounds like an exciting time and a great class Jurgen. I am attending André Oorebeeks class at the PTG convention here in GR next month with my son Jer Jr. I am very much looking forward to it. I could use some brushing up on my voicing skills again as we all can. We can never know enough about things like this.

Jer Jr., will also be getting a private tuning tutoring class from Bill Bremmer as well as a few other classes that only hold 15-18 people. I will be attending these classes with him for support being his first convention and all. It will be a good learning experience for him as well.

There is a chance that André Oorebeek might be coming to New York at some time, but his next scheduled seminar is in Grand Rapids next month.

I first saw Jack Brand's hammer felt seminar in Burbank last February. I encouraged the CAPT organizers to bring him in to the Toronto hammer conference, and it was the perfect fit.
