Hey everyone!

So I have this short melody I'm trying to learn posted below. It's off the TV show One Tree Hill and as you can see it's during the end credits. I'm trying to learn it by ear and I have picked out the treble no problem....but I can't seem to get the chords right for the base. I think the key is like a C major Dorian or something. Please help!

Thanks,
Alex

To me it sounds like the key of D.

And the chords through the 1st 8 measures are D, Bm, G, and D (twice through).

the next part is not complete but starts out D, F#m and G.

Perfect! That did it. My treble was just a half a step to high so now it's all in D. Thanks for the help, it's greatly appreciated!

Once you have the melody notes figured out here is a chart I've found helpful to come up with chords that will harmonize with the melody.
Quote
1 degree of the scale try I, IV, vi or ii7 chords of that key.
2 degree of the scale try V, ii7, iii7 chords of that key.
3 degree of the scale try I, vi, iii chords of that key.
4 degree of the scale try IV, ii, v7 chords of that key.
5 degree of the scale try V, I, iii chords of that key.
6 degree of the scale try IV, ii, vi chords of that key.
7 degree of the scale try V7, iii, Imaj7 chords of that key.

Key of D looking for a chord to go with the F# melody note. F# is the 3rd degree of the D scale so the I (D,F#,A), vi (B,D,F#), or iii (F#,A,C#) chords will have a F# note in their makeup thus harmonize.

It's a chicken or egg thing. Works both ways -- looking for chords to harmonize notes or looking for notes to use over chords. The chart will give you several choices and your ear can decide which is best.

Have fun.

Malcolm

Joe is absolutely correct with these chords, but could I just point out

that on the F#m chord, the note played in the bass is C# - creating

that 'smooth' run-down to the G chord, rather than jumping 'up' to the G.

Hope this helps.
