Hi All,

a friend of mine pointed me towards this new classical composer BW Recknagel and his Album "Nihilum", its stunning stuff, very dark and emtional tunes, check it out when you are in the "moood", reminds of french impressionists and russian romantics

www.bwrecknagel.com

would be nice to hear more contemporay composers writing like this, i shall keep searching..

:-)

I'm not sure I'd call this classical. A bit geared towards the pop market, maybe (as usual when composers write "albums") where music like that is called "classical" where it should really be called "classically influenced pop" (similarly, Paul Potts singing Frank Sinatra's My Way in Italian with orchestral backdrop is marketed as "opera"). In any case, it doesn't sound very original to me. It's also about 100 years late.

Another cross-over type album is Max Richter's 24 Postcards in Full Color. He studied with Berio and this particular album was influenced by the ringtone.

I have the album, and it's actually quite clever!

It just seems like a simpler version of what I can already get listening to Beethoven or Chopin in a more satisfying way.

Hi All,

I don't know what defines good music but i do like "Nihilum" the more I listen to it, as Theowne says, it is very "satisfying"

:-)

The music is very nice, and somewhat adventurous harmonically. It sounds a lot like Rachmaninov and some Chopin. I did notice all the tempi are fairly slow. I didn't listen to all of each piece, is there anything that would qualify as Allegro or faster anywhere? Is there any music that's actually joyful or happy here? Frankly there's more angst in this music than I usually enjoy. A few really sad pieces is good, but too much can be depressing. Overall, it's nice music, but I'd like more variety.

Just to correct, I didn't say that. I said I thought existing classical music was more satisfying, and that these pieces just seem like simplified versions of those.
