A dog plays the Singaporean anthem in a piano store.
The salesman acclaims: "What a marvellous dog!"
The dog owner replies: " (to be supplied by snoopycar or other Singaporeans) "

Hello,

I went Cristofori Bedok today. Just a few questions:

1. Is Cristofori pianos a Singapore Brand?
2. Is Cristofori pianos KC-121cm exactly the same as Yamaha U1? The store owner says is the same manufacturer, same parts from the same country.

Thanks!

Greetings all,

I'm new here. And I'm glad I found this Forum (and particularly this thread)! laugh

Let me introduce a bit here, so that my questions can be better answered.

I started learning to play the piano only about 4 years ago. Piano and its lessons are never cheap and after being financially independent at age 26, I've managed to start living my childhood dream of learning the piano!

My first lesson was at Yamaha (Plaza Singapura), and learnt classical piano for about half a year. Due to commitment and other reasons, I switched to contemporary and went back to classical and also tried learning from music school that teaches "playing by ear". I had never taken piano exam before, but my piano teacher once told me I'm in the Grade 3-4 range (think he's being nice).

My first piano was this 20 year old piano that costs $1000. My second piano was this Clavinova piano (CLP-240) bought from Yamaha, which I sold it about 2 months ago.

I know that it is time that I get my first NEW piano! I do not know much about other brands, but pianos from Yamaha beats the list for me.

Here are my questions:
1. I'm thinking of getting a Silent Piano from Yamaha. I'm looking at this M112T silent piano model ($8500). The base model costs $5700 without the silent feature. I like the feel and touch when I play it. The other models are either to expensive or the touch is simply... not my type.

2. Is Silent Piano difficult to maintain? I kind of need the Silent feature as I have a habit of playing at 9pm+ into the night, which I feel kinda embarrassed to play aloud since I don't play that well and I don't want to disturb the neighbours.

3. Honestly, despite point 2, is it good to get a Silent one?

Thanks all for reading! And thanks in advance for any advice given!!! thumb

Hi Purpur,

Can't advise you much. Haha, coz I don't know much myself either.

But do note that in Singapore, you can make noise / loud music up to 10pm at night. After 10pm, your neighbours can complain if you are making too much noise / music too loud.

So, if you usually stop playing the piano by 10pm, I don't think is a need to get a silent one.

Also, haha, don't be embarrassed to play aloud lah. Please lor, not as if your neighbours will go figure out who is that person, stay which floor one, which unit, playing the piano. Don't think they are so KPO :p

Anyway, it is good to be considerate, but I dun think you play that badly lah.

If you stay away from books it will help every piano book is somewhat bias about a certain brand and it will usually lead u twards what the writer plays

i sold away the CLP 240 cos the feel and sound just isn't there anymore. smile i just can't resist the feeling of real hammer, erm, hammering whenever i hit the keys on an acoustic piano. and, the sound of a digital piano just doesn't sound right anymore. laugh

Hello,

Just want to double check, with a budget of 3k to 4k for a new upright piano which is at least 121cm, I have looked at

1. Hailun
2. Wendl & Lung
3. Young Chang
4. Pearl River
5. Samick
6. Cristofori (outside budget)
7. Atlas

What other brands/makes have I missed which is available in Singapore? Or which other shops have other varieties and are within my requirements. Haha, just want to make sure I try all the possibilities before choosing one... Thanks!

Bihua, have you considered going the digital piano route? You could probably get a pretty good Yamaha Clavinova CLP series piano with that amount of money you're willing to spend. Plus, you'll never have to get it tuned, ever smile

Hi Philip926,

Thanks. Ya, digital pianos was never in my consideration list.

I thought digital pianos are usually for beginners? And the sounds are not so good. Correct me if I am wrong. Though I have not tried one before. Also, how many years warranty does digital pianos give? Are they made up of hammers striking the strings as well?

Also, just my thought, digital stuff are electronics, which have a lifespan that is much shorter than mechanical ones. If a mechanical piano spoilt, I can still replace some parts, and it still can work. But a digital one, is electronics. Once the chips are burnt. That is it. No sound means no sound. And electronics move very fast. After a few years, better electronics have been found, the old ones are very quickly replaced. In fact is worse than computer. I can still buy RAMs, Harddisk, Motherboard separately from Sim Lim to replace and upgrade my computer. But for digital pianos, there is no way I can upgrade the parts right? Or they are actually available? Correct me if I am wrong. Haha, actually I don't know anything about digital pianos. :p Let me know if I have any misconceptions.

Personally, I am looking for a piano (decent one, yet not too expensive) for me and my family to enjoy for many years. I will only upgrade to very good ones like maybe a Yamaha grand if anyone in the family shows potential to move to a higher level, and the current piano is no longer sufficient.
