Hey Piano Forum!

Well um I'm not very good at Upright pianos...I dont know what to look for and what i need to live a happy life with a long lasting piano. I have been thinking about digital pianos... but I'd rather have the real thing! SO!!!
I need help finding a reasonably cheap....as cheap as possible .. my budget is around maybe 5000 dollars ...hmm 30,000 NOK anyway, im a begginner so i guess i dont really need a really tall one. all i need is something that suits a beginner, has all three pedals and looks nice, but the cabinet doesnt really matter and all pianos look nice laugh so any good suggestions? brand names? anything, what piano action to look for.. i just basically need info on how to know what to look for...


wow sorry i just cant write in paragraphs frown all is probably very unclear... oh well laugh

Yamaha model P22 has been an institutional workhorse for years.
Recent used Baldwin model 243.
New Kawai UST9.
New Yamaha T121 or T118.
All of these would be good choices to suit your needs.

If you really want detail for your diligence work take a look at the Larry Fine book or our book.

Marty gives some good starting points.

Go out and auditon pianos. Hear what appeals to you and what does NOT appeal to you. I don't know what is available in Norway but I don't think the Baldwin is distributed there.

After you play some instruments, post them here with any questions and we are happy to help. smile

Well I'm not very good with brands, I just go for a nice sound and advice from the shop assistants!!

When I began, I went to a shop that do reconditioned and SOME new pianos, and said, I have £150 (sorry, don't do dollars!), and asked if they had any second hand ones in their workshop. He took me straight to a row of pianos, and puled out a REALLY nice sounding one. It looked terrible, but we decided that we were going to do it up ourselves. It was made by Murdogh Murdogh & co, which are apparently quite good. It has lasted me until now, grade 5, and we have put a deposit on a new one, made by some german people who i don't know! But if I were you, I'd just go into a shop, and ask for a beginners piano around your budget. $1500 will probably get you a small reconditioned upright. Oh, and don't get one off ebay. ever. Acoustic are better to learn on than digital, and I prefer the sound anyway!

I just bought a new Kawai K-2 vertical and absolutely love it and can't wait to actually have it in my house (to be delivered next Friday!). Kawai's stuck out to me, I loved the tone and action of the uprights.

Really I would just try everything there is to try, including those beyond your budget. It helps in figuring out what sound or qualities you would want in a piano. For a beginner (like me) you don't need something over the top, but I would go for the best piano you can afford. My Kawai was way under $5,000 and I think it should last a long time. Also, some dealers (or at least the ones I worked with) offer a full value trade up should you wish to do so.

May Berlin M 121 T
Ritmuller UP-120R
Wendl & Lung 122.

120's offer a good price/performance combination.

If you don't like a piano's tone, it has no value at all to you.

Patience and persistence.

It helps, yes... but the problem is that, there is no piano store in my town XD

thanks, Well i found out (via Google Calculator) what my budget is and it is: 4 633.56 U.S. dollars

But i live in a very small town in norway, so my problem is that my mother is afraid of driving too far away from home so.. i cant really try out many pianos. However we will try.
