I'm messing around with something most people will immediately say doesn't exist, and that's fine, I'm not terribly concerned about that in this post.

As such, I am finding that I need to annotate a whole note to hold for the length of a whole note plus one quarter note.

The quarter notes, I can just tack the dot to suggest that it's a quarter and an eighth, so that's normal.

But for a half note, I need it to hold for two quarters and an eighth, and a whole I need it to hold for 5 quarters.

So...is there a notation for telling a half note to hold for an extra eighth, and is there a notation for a whole note to hold for one extra quarter?

Thanks for any help.

The rule is that the dot adds half the value of the note to which it is attached. So unfortunately, nope, there is no notation for this except the good ol' tie. Nothing wrong with a tie!

I suppose that will work, but I'll be doing something akin to this on nearly every note in the theoretical piece...would seem like a terrible amount of ties.

frown

bummer.
