Noticed an instrument in a customer’s front room and said, “Oh, you have a euphonium!” “No, it is an E-flat tuba.” “Really, I have never seen music for an E-flat tuba. Do you play Baritone sax music on it?” “No, it plays the same notes as a regular tuba, but not as low, just uses different fingering.”

There’s always another angle to look at anything. There’s more than one way to keep from transposing. But I now remember playing C music in the treble clef by going by the notes names of bass clef, B-flat fingering instead of transposing.

But to take this a little further, I sometimes wonder if high school pianos used for band instrument accompaniment ought to be tuned in a well temperment centered on B-flat, since the B-flat trumpet is the lead voice. Probably not, though. It seems that the F and E-flat instruments never fit in with the rest of the band, anyway. It would probably make things worse.

I wouldn't worry about it too much. Usually the piano isn't used for accompanying the band, and anyway there's a mix of transposing instruments - E-flat, B-flat, F, and of course a few non-transposing instruments as well.

Wind instruments are naturally in just intonation, but it is possible to alter that a bit when playing. So it is up to them to adjust to the piano.

Well, bugles are in just intonation and all the notes on a brass instrument that are played with the same fingering are just to each other, and perhaps the upper register of a clarinet is just in respect to the lower register. Double-reeded instruments is a case I do not know much about. So there are exceptions where just intonation is designed into some notes of some wind instruments, but any instrument capable of more than natural harmonics, could not always be in just intonation.

Bassoons probably require more cork grease, have larger reeds,(variable) neck strap vs seat strap, WHISPER KEY etc. thanks to transposing we can hear these instruments in their natural range.
English Horns ...soulful....in the past for me band instruments were tuned by a conn. strobe..thanks for the eye opener,I never thought of this till Pianos came about...will work on my diaphram!
and ears!
