Hello I recently got an upright piano, but it was painted the ugliest green I've ever seen, so I've been stripping it off and plan to leave it as a lacquered wood, however while i was stripping the flip down piece i went over the pianos decal and was kinda disappointed in myself smirk. so i was wondering if anybody would know how to order or maybe a good diy method to restore it? the piano is Weber (was partially taken off with the New York) underneath it. hopefully not some sort of collectors..eep, thanks in advance

As I remember, some of the old Weber uprights actually had a decal that was an endorsement from Paderewski on the underside of the lid. It's a paragraph or two long. Be careful stripping the paint here... I doubt you'll be able to find a replacement for this particular decal.

The programs for these concert tours are at the Research Collection, New York Public Library, Performing Arts Division. Copies at the Polish Music Center. The tours of 1899-1905 were sponsored by Steinway Pianos whose advertising appeared in them; the tour of 1907-1908 was sponsored by Weber piano.

This is at the bottom under "Notes".

A Google search under 'paderewski weber piano' will return many more results.

Use this one. If you've never done a varnish transfer(and even if you have) you'll prefer Decals Unlimited. MUCH more likely to succeed.

It depends on what you are comfortable working with, whether it matters if the piano is refinished out of it's period, durability, etc.

If you've completely removed the old finish, you might want to consider filling the pores first before finishing... especially if you are going for a high-gloss look. Though aesthetic opinions will vary, I've always thought it's best to use a filler that is darker than the color of the wood after staining.

You might also want to investigate various glazing techniques in case various pieces don't have a good color match after staining.

You don't necessarily need to use oil stains. You could use aniline dye... with GLOVES!

If you choose shellac, you could use certain alcohol-based aniline dyes in dedicated bottles of shellac for glazing.

If you buy shellac at the store premixed, check for an expiration or mixing date to make sure you won't have drying problems. (If there is no expiration or mixing date, do not buy it.... no matter what the salesman tells you.) It can be safer to just make your own from scratch. Also, apply shellac in low humidity. Also, if you use shellaxc, you could investigate various methods of French polishing, using 4-F pumice as a filler.

If the piano has a matching bench, you could practice on that first.

Do not refinish the soundboard and back unless you really know what you are doing.
