Hi everyone,

I took piano lessons for 10 years and got my grade 7 piano certification at the end of high school, then stopped because I had to move away to university.

Now it's been 4 years and I'm done university. I'm now wondering if I should go for my grade 8 piano? This would mean finding another teacher and a lot of hard work ahead...

I just feel like grade 8 is a real milestone to achieve and I feel like I'm almost there with having grade 7, but I'm not sure if I have enough in me to get into it again. I used to have nightmares about my piano exams. No joke.

Any advice from those who have taken it? I used to take exams with RCM and then switched to Conservatory Canada.

I think you may find that, having survived University, you'll be less stressed out taking exams now. If it's something you really want then you should go for it.

On the other hand, unless you're planning on teaching music or doing something where the credential is necessary then there are lots of other ways to advance. I would think some lessons would help - maybe if you shop around you can find teachers who can hook you up with ensembles of various kinds?

I'm really not sure what you are asking here. Yes, I've taken RCM exams, but how does that relate to what you have done and where you are? Only you know if you really want to do this. How can we recommend that you find another teacher and commit to the work if you don't yet know whether you want to do it?

The advantage to examinations and competitions is that they give one a fixed goal to work towards; it that's what you need, then go ahead.

Regards,

You could always continue taking lessons, working on Gr. 8 requirements but decide later if you want to take the actual exam. Taking the exam is not required. I like the exams because it gives me something to work towards. Having a teacher also gives me something to work towards (playing better at the next lesson), but I would still end up not focusing as much.

Professional pianist and piano teacher.
