Well, if you have to ask... smile

It's only $118,100 for the NY model. The Hamburg model will set you back about $162,000. The bench is included.

Honest, I'm not pitching anything, but after my first NY factory training, after meeting the guys who build these pianos and watching the process up close, I came away shaking my head and asking myself, "How do they sell them so cheaply?!!".

Are you looking to get one? Or are you just curious?

Getting a piano of that size is ambitious, so may I ask if you were getting one, what is it for? Your house? or a hall or something?

That sounds a little laughable, but hey, you're a dealer. By the way, Jordan Kitt's in the DC area is also a Yamaha dealer and is losing their Steinway dealership. Will you be losing yours, as well?

Buy one now because the D will cost over $300k by 2030 if Steinway continues its practice of raising prices 5% each year.

Yeah, but even so, I think that Grotrian, Yamaha, and Kawai all sell concert instruments at about that price and Mason & Hamlin, Estonia, and Petrof are a lot cheaper and arguably just as good. I really need to get an updated Piano Book Supplement, though.

Choleric, we're hanging in there, no Going-Out-of-Business sale anytime soon. By the way, your CVP307 is a great instrument!

Hmm...Two ways to interpret that statement;
"cheap as in price or cheaply made" Steinway does sell them cheap as in wholesale.It's the dealers that don't care to discount.
Actually my biz thrives on Steinway sticking to their guns and not discounting along with their yearly price increases.So....my sucess is based on Steinway's continued etiquette so SELL SELL SELL at retail of course. grin grin

Hmmmm... I thought this thread was about a 9 foot piano and not about a 1 and 1/2 footer... grin

Considering that he is a Clavinova dealer I doubt he was "rubbing" me. I question the price of Steinway somewhat given they make far more pianos than companies like Bosendorfer, Bechstein, Mason & Hamlin, etc... Whether that means less attention to detail, I'm not sure. Bottom line, far more play the Steinway on stage than others. Without all the marketing, though, hmmmm....I wonder who would be ahead in that market? I hear that Bosendorfer is most popular on stages in China. But that is based on a comment that a Chinese piano teacher told me once, based upon her observation...not sure of the veracity of that statement. Sorry, don't mean to hijack the thread...just a stream of consciousness here.

Jason,

That depends upon new or used, and condition of the instrument.

Actually, I have a vivid memory of falling in love with a Steinway Concert Grand at Jordan Kitt's former Merrifield location when I was a teenager. My teacher was a friend of some of the teachers there and was able to arrange some practice sessions on it for a concerto I was working on. (She played the piano reduction on another Steinway)

In late 1992 or early 1993, the listed price was 78,000. I remember joking with my parents that night if I could trade my pending college education for it! If you go to the Westegg inflation calculator, that is 118k today...so it seems Steinways have only increased with the rate of inflation.

Btw without rehashing the previous threads, I've known about pianoworld for a while but came here specifically to get the "dirt" about Jordan Kitts losing Steinway. Let's face it, that's a pretty big story as they are one of the country's largest piano/organ chains, in a market where classical music is more viable right now than almost anywhere else in the country. (a provocative statement to be sure, I might have waited a while to postulate it as I don't want to seem like a noob who's trolling...but seriously, look at the recent participants in the Furman piano competition: http://www.furman.edu/depts/music/danielcompetition.htm )
