Hi Guys,

I thought I'd begin this topic to maybe become a major category on this board later. Although not a very popular style today, this style was the outcome of ragtime and what is known and shout or Harlem piano. The style is simple! Without going into a lengthy dissertation, the left hand goes back and forth between a single bass note, octave, tenth or sixth and a middle keyboard chord inversion. Some of the giants of this style were Eubie Blake, Fats Waller, Lucky Roberts, Willie the Lion Smith, and the grandaddy of it all, Art Tatum. Those who played it well participated in cutting jam contests that lasted all night long. They need the money to pay rent so ti was more of a lifestyle or means of living. The great stride pianists played pieces like "Handful of keys" and "Caroline Shout" at breakneck tempos" which is an understatment. Tempos like a half note =114 or more was quite common. More modern day artists who have mastered this style include Judy Carmichael, Mike Lipskin, the late Dick Wellstood, Dick Hyman, and Jim Hesson(sp?) to name a few! Later, stride grew into what is known as swing that emerged from the big band arrangements. Swing was more relaxed and the playing of Teddy Wilson and Oscar Peterson exemplified this style!

I learnt (or rather half learnt) King Porters stomp once, by Jelly Roll Morton.
And I did transcribe for a laugh an Art Tatum solo, completely unplayable by humans though.
