I was hoping someone had recently bought a Schimmel 120i and could tell me if $7500 is a good deal. If not, I may consider going with a 116s. I admit that I have not found a 120i to play, but if it sounds even better than the 116, it ought to be great, and perhaps worth a few extra dollars as this is the last time I ever want to go through the Piano buying process. Well that is an overstatement, I am actually enjoying this. My wife however is not. If mama ain't happy....

Ok, I am replying to my own message. Has anyone played a Schimmel 120i. What do you think of it. The only one I have seen was still unprepped and I counldn't play it. I am still tied between the Schimmel 116s and the Charles Walter, but if the Schimmel 120i is a good step up from the 116s, then that would break the tie. I realize it is more money, but this 120i, that I counldn't play, was for sale for only $7500 and I can make that stretch if it is a GOOD step above the others. (However, the place I saw it is in Arizona and I am not sure my local dealer in Michigan will come down to that price.) If he doesn't, I will probably go with the Walter, because I can get that for $5750 and the although it sounds different than the Schimmel 116s, it is equally pleasant, IMHO.

Hi, Captain:

I played a Schimmel 130 (probably at the same Arizona dealership, AZ Pianos?). I liked the tone, but the action was heavy for me. I remember thinking it was a "guy's piano," very muscular and assertive. I didn't get an exact price quote, but I know it was more than $8K... but it was also a larger size than what you're talking about.

I liked the tone better than the CWalter, but liked the action on the CWalter better. Don't think either is a dud.

Thanks Nina,

That's the place. I was told that was the price and it didn't sound like there was room for negotiation and since I didn't plan on buying one from that far away, I didn't try.

Hi Captain,

I also live in the Midwest and I received one price quote for the 120 (I believe it was the T model, not the I). This was "discount" price off of list (prior to any real negotiating) for an Ebony and the price was $8900. I think if the dealer in your area has multiple Schimmels in the store you may be able to negotiate close to the $7500 price?

Personally, after reading Larry Fine's book, I think it makes sense to go for the best piano that you can afford. I've heard that the whole trading up concept is a myth so you should be happy with what you get but the most important thing is to PLAY the piano you buy. I think it's taking a risk if you don't play it.
