Are there any you would put in this category? Why?

I think Marc Andre Hamelin has a very funny sense of humor when playing encores(but mixed with an ultra serious stage presence when performing the main part of his program).

Examples would be his Etude based on La Campanella

his Irritation Waltz
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2QK3...ynext=1&playnext_from=PL&index=8

and penchant for encores like

Doucet's Chopiniata
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NM3i...next=1&playnext_from=PL&index=12

Sciarrino's Amorfosi which combines Jeux d'eux, Une Barque sur l'Ocean and Singin in the Rain:

Shchedrin's Humoresque

The only other pianist I can think of who liked to have so much fun with his audience at encore time was Cherkassky with pieces like Boogie Woogie Etude and Rustle of Spring.

I reckon I'll stick with Victor Borge and Chico Marx. Oscar Levant and Steve Allen deserve a mention, too, even if they were perhaps at their funniest when away from the piano.

Borge, Marx, and Allen were primarily comedians who happened to be terrific pianists. I don't think Levant was humorous during his straight classical performances.

i went to a recital of a young friend of mine.. he's off to college and may major in organ, physics or piano.. quite a talented kid.

anyway, he was playing his first piece - a Brahms, and someone's cell phone went off.

he turned and went HELLOOOOOOO -sounding like the the guy with the five o clock shadow on the Simpsons.

quite funny since he is such a real fuddy-dud serious kid.

accompanist/organist.. a non-MTNA teacher to a few
