Do you have success teaching your own children piano? I hate to admit this but I have been very lax in this area. I find by the end of the evening I am so burned out with students AND with a full studio, the piano is rarely free to practice.

Things went well with teaching my daughter, who was a very natural musician who liked to compose and improvise, until she was about 8 years old and got frustrated that her teensy hands weren't getting much bigger. Her hands are still only about 3/4 the size of mine, which are not especially large. So now-- go figure-- she plays cello! Along with the clarinet and percussion she plays in her dad's band.

But just recently she composed and performed a score for a short film single-handedly (well, both hands, actually) on her Mini-Korg. I said, "Remember when you were four years old and a synthesizer was your favorite toy?" "And now it is again!" she replied. She's also started playing keyboard with an experimental electronica sort of band, and is collaborating on the score for a somewhat more substantial movie.

So it appears that the piano lessons "took" at least a bit. She's 21 now. Please forgive me for bragging!

Um yeah.... I tried that. I had no problem putting on the "teacher hat" the boys just couldn't put on the "student hat". They were young, probably under 10.

I traded with another piano teacher. She taught mine, and I taught hers. Much better

I taught both of my kids from a young age until about Jr High. Then the eye rolling and attitude started and that was my signal to find someone else. But it worked great until then. I also teach my niece and nephews.
