In flagrant imitation of Mary-Rose's Chopin E-cital I would like to organize a similar event in recognition of Schumann's bicentennial June 8 2010. That is 10 months away.
If you are interested in participating let me know and I will post a list of pieces and performers. I have no illusions about being able to cover all of Schumann's music, so I think of this more as a gesture of recognition- so the day does not pass by and Robert is there wondering what happened. Duplicates, extemporizing, re-writing - it's all good.
I"ll bump this thread from time to time to keep you on your toes.

OT, but I'm curious about the consensus: was Schumann's best work in his piano output? These works are without a doubt both fantastic and generally accessible but exclude, for example, his Violin Concerto in D-Minor.
It would probably be wrong for me not to contribute something to this as much as I love Schumann. I would love to go out and say something outlandish like I'd play op 15 in its entirety, but that's just not going to happen in my lifetime, let alone ten months.
I'll take Op 15, No 1 and 2. Much as I think 2, might do me in, I need something to motivate me to fix measures 9-12 at a proper tempo.

I'll do "A Curious Story", From Foreign lands and People (A chance to improve on my last performance) and "An Important Event" all from Opus 15.
Woops just looked at Home in My Shoes. I may have picked two of his. Not sure as there are no numbers in my Schumann book. If so then I would take An Important Event from Opus 15 and Chiarina from Opus 9.

If you want Peyton, you can have "A Curious Story" (2) and "From Foreign Lands" (1) from op. 15 and I'll take "Pleading Child" (4). I need to rework my interpretation of it.
Or you and I can put ours together and see what we like better prior to the recital out of 1, 2, 4, and 6?

Peyton - HomeInMyShoes signed up for #1 (Foreign lands and people) and #2 (Strange Story) from Kinderszenen Op 15. So then I'll sign you up for Op 15 #6 = "Wichtige Begebenheit" = "Important Occurance"; and Op 9 Carnaval: Chiarina if that's ok.

:P Haha. The first non adult-beginners e-cital I'm attempting to participate in and I'm making a mess of it.
I emailed Peyton and said he could have 1 and 2. I'll take "Bittendes Kind" (4) and "Am Kamin" (8) instead. I'll have to actually learn "Am Kamin" from scratch. Ten months should be enough time. Hopefully.
In summary: Peyton: "Von fremden Landern und Menschen", "Kuriose Geshichte", Wichtige Begebenheit" (1,2,6) HomeInMyShoes: "Bittendes Kind", "Am Kamin" (4,8)

What a wonderful idea! I must look into my Schumann CD's and find something I will be possibly able to play on time (considering I still have to do my Mazurka 7/3 for March ), and I hope I will manage to participate too! Now I'm completely lost, as I'm not really familiar with his compositions, which is sad and I hope to change that in the near future.

Well Mati this should be an excellent opportunity to become acquainted with R.S. - there is so much good stuff there you won't have any trouble finding something you like - pretty soon you will be saying "Frederic who?"
and anyway, it's all still 10 months away - time enough to forget all about it and then scramble the last week to put something together!

Is there any chance of putting my name down for Kinderszenen Op 15 #1 (Von Fremden Laendern und Menschen)? I see from above it's already taken by Peyton, but as Peyton's name is against 4 pieces in total, is that not a bit greedy?

Fair enough as you shouted first, but I still don't think it's very fair that some people have already got their name down against more than one piece when others haven't had a chance to pick one yet.

Gerry.. don't want you to be miffed. (It's a friendly forum after all...) Please go ahead and take #1 (although Home In My Shoes was the first to pick #1 and #2 so he should have final say). If we can only have one piece then I guess I'll take Chiarina. Are we just limited to one piece?

Technically, Peyton is only up for one piece, Kinderszenen, and even of that he is so modest as to only play excerpts and leave the other parts to someone else

I think duplication is fine for this recital if we have people that want to play the same things. It might be a little awkward to have duplications, given some of the talent here, but I don't make the rules
I'm not that familiar with a lot of Schumann, and it's been a while since I've tried this, but I've wanted to get "Fast zu ernst" (Kinderszenen no.10) polished up for a while now. Put me down for that? I'll keep looking for others.

I'm not miffed, honestly. And please don't think I'm picking on you because that was certainly not my intention as I also enjoy the friendly atmosphere in this forum.
I'm just pointing out that if the idea of a recital such as this is to try and get as many people to participate as possible, then surely it would make sense to give everyone some time to declare an interest in taking part and select a piece before others start adding 2nd, 3rd, 4th pieces?
Just my opinion of course, others may disagree which is fair enough.

No, no one is limited to one piece, nor is anyone limited in their selection - extemporaneous variations, re-writes, channelling Schumann's spirit on the Astral - it's all good - duplicate entries also ok with me -
I'm hoping for the video of a modernist, interpretive dance from someone (not me) for example -

Frycek, the Grand Piano World Society of Chopin Lovers hereby grant you the permission to participate in Schumannians recital and issue an order to do so, staying with your Traumerei in line and not giving it to Horowitzian unless *absolutely* necessary. Such a necessity will need to be proven with strong evidence to be accepted. ;-)
But, seriously, Frycek, stay! I want to hear your Schumann

Frycek... don't even THINK of backing out!! Horowizian, is there any chance you could contribute Traumeri as well? As Shubertian says "Duplicates, extemporizing, re-writing - it's all good." We can't ever have too much Traumeri!

Hear the words of the anti-Schumann Frycek: "Someone has to do it", "You can have it an welcome". Is a Struggle Session called for?
Seriously F - you've got 10 months to decide if you want to do this thing or not, and if you do, what you might like to play. We would all be delighted to hear your contribution - as we always are. But it is just for fun you know -

I really hope someone decides to play the Geistervariationen. They're so beautiful especially when one considers under what conditions they were composed.

OK, I'll stay, though if anyone has strong feelings about Traeumerie I'll happily relinquish it. I jumped in with it since I'm on a repetoire rehabilition kick and it was a good way to insure I polish that one up.

Frycek - this is not a 1=person-one-piece deal - or a 1-piece-1-person thing either - if your rep is in rehab then go for it - consider yourself ideologically rehabilitated as well - by the Committee

To add to my "piggishness..." unless someone else steps up to play it I'll also play op 9 "Chopin"... one of my favorite Shumann pieces. It really needs to be included. However, as much as I love to play it I will gladly pass it on to any that wants it.

I like the idea of a piece-fest - it would be really interesting to listen to everybody's different interpretations - especially something polyphonic (poly-voiced?) like Traeumerie or the piece I'm doing - because there is lots of scope for individuality...
PS: I love the way this recital has brought together P and AB forums - nice work Schubertian...

Kinderszenen is closed out.
I'm thinking about dropping Dichterliebe - it really doesn't work without the interplay of piano and voice - even though the transcription is very good.

^Is that a change from the original one person per piece? If so, I'd really like to add Op. 15 no. 1 to the nos. 4 and 8 I am already signed up for. I think it would be tragic not to include a piece I've played every day for probably the last half year. Every day it's different and every day I love it.

Well, we certainly wouldn't want that to happen, now would we?
But where exactly is good old Robert, and is he really in any condition to be "wondering"... just asking
Please mark me down for the ubiquitous Op.68, No.1 since it wouldn't be a complete Schumann celebration without it; it does have a simple but sweet "Melody"; and any piece in C Major with the lower staff under control of a G clef throughout is a piece I can probably handle in the relatively early stages of my fantasy piano career.
Good luck with this - great idea

There never was a rule like that for this e-cital. You may be thinking of the CHopin e-cital - they instituted that rule because they want to present the entire corpus on Chopin's birthday and it would have been impossible given our somewhat limited resources to get all of that accomplished without laying out some guidelines.
I have not done that here because, frankly, I was never expecting the huge turnout.

Looks like a mistake in Op 68. Op 68 #16 is First Sorrow (Erster Verlust)

Yes, it is APril Fool's Day - you fools - but this is no joke 2 months to the Schumann Birthday ecital
For anyone new to this - this recital is a little less restrictive than the Chopin recital - it's a do-your-own-thing recital - I don't care if there are duplicates, or if one person plays more than one piece - 'it's all good' as we dzogchenpa's say - I don't even care if you record somebody else and try to pass it off as Schumann - if it feels RIGHT to you DO IT!
The Chopin recital had certain restrictions because the organizers are trying to get recordings of all of CHopin, and duplicates just sort of mess that scheme up -
But Schumann was such a mess himself that he would probably prefer things this way - more for a multiple personality hallucinogenic hippy kind of ecital -
and the way it works is you select a piece or two you like, sign up here, work it up until you can stand to record it - - - then on a special day close to the recital an announcement will go out unto all lands on this board to send in your stuff, with some notes about the recording process, and the edition etc - - and the software elves will put it all up on line while you sleep - asking only your first born as payment
Here's the list as I believe it to be currently
