Wow! That's great news, especially for someone like me who's looking to get a new DP before the holidays. Is there any link or official site regarding this?

Hmm...It will probably be the CVPs since those are the current 4x0 series. The CLP Clavinovas (CLP-3x0) are fairly new and probably won't get changed yet.

it must be CVP, since its 400 series was out in 2007. it's about the time. i wonder also if they would have the upgrade for CP33/300, which is due for that as well.

I really liked the CVP 409, it was way too expensive for me at the time ($8,000), I can't imagine what other features they would add.

MP3/WAV record and playback direct to USB?

...assuming the 400 series do not offer this functionality already, of course.

Cheers,
James

Good news, I am also waiting to see what Yamaha is planned to match with Roland V-Piano...

I thought they already had a model with their own vision of the V-Piano - the AvantGrand.

I think the 409 had all that, plus a microphone plug in and wireless connection.

Is the AvantGrand a modeled piano?

Here's the website for the AvantGrand http://www.avant-grand.com/ .

Yamaha's approach is more to the touch and interaction with the piano - an action that is much closer to a grand piano, four channel speakers with a soundboard (not that a soundboard in a digital piano is that new, I know there is another model that has one - Roland maybe?), samples taken very close to the soundboard, reverberation felt through the keyboard and pedal, a much more accurate model of the pedal response.

Ah, yes, you're right. Thank you for clarifying this. wink

EDIT: It would appear that the CVP instruments are able to record to WAV format, but not directly MP3 format.

Actually the CVP's don't do wireless by themselves. You either have to use a USB wifi adapter (and a very limited set of compatible ones at that) or a wireless/wired ethernet bridge (easiest and surefire way).

The Kawai CA61/91 have a soundboard. Also note that the "soundboard" on the avant grand does not act as a traditional soundboard in that it is not a sound source, but it seems to be there to assist more in the "feel" and for aural effect.

Actually I think they are two very different approaches that are trying to solve similar but different problems. The v-piano is really about an upgrade in technology, making the leap from sampling to modeling and adding some other goodies like digital out with effects. The AvantGrand really appears to be an evolution of current DP's, albeit one that is taken to an extreme. Heck, the V doesn't even have speakers and the AG's biggest claims to fame are it's action and it's sound system.

If the Avant Grand and the CVP could be put together I would end my piano search immediately, unless of course it was prohibitively expensive (which it would be for the first couple years dammit).

No, the AvantGrand is still sampled. The advances over the regular models are in the speaker system and in vibrating transducers to simulate strings vibrating when you play.

luthermusic is usually accurate :-)

Ok, so most of the Japanese models will go on sale Oct. 15th. It's interesting that they dumped the x07 model. The 501 is a nice improvement over the 401. It now has a decent action and 3-level sample (1-level for the 401).

Well the 07 and 09 were identical except the cabinetry (09 available in PE) and the 09's synth ivory keytops. So if they added synth ivory as standard (or removed it), then really the only difference between the 09 and 07 would be the cabinetry choice, probably not warranting different model designations.

Unfortunately I don't read Japanese, but outwardly they look similar to the 4xx models, I wonder what has changed?

Try this:

Go to http://translate.google.com/translate_t?hl=en# and change the start language to Japanese. Then paste in the URL from above. I recommend that you use the Spec page which is the url above with /spec.html instead of /index.html For example,

http://www.yamaha.co.jp/product/piano-keyboard/cvp-509/spec.html

You'll get a mostly readable result.

The 409 wireless did require a similar set up to wireless for your computer.

Still (unless money´s not too tight to mention), it is sometimes useful to wait a little while in order not to pay the premium price. That could also work against you, of course, since I bought my DP after the 10% price increase by Yamaha, but I suppose (or hope) that they won´t do that twice in one year (or everybody will revert to Roland straight away).
