Hi,
... what words do you use to describe beats smaller than a quarter note?
I was taught to use:
"1 and, 2 and" for eighth notes,
"1 e and a" for sixteenth notes,
"trip-a-let" for triplets..
What do you use for a (excuse me if this is not the correct word) pentuplet? (5 notes to the quarter note)

Do any teachers use numbers to represent the fractional note values? For instance, I count a measure of sixteenth notes in common time as 1-2-3-4- 2-2-3-4- 3-2-3-4- 4-2-3-4. The numbers have a logical correspondence to dividing the beat in a way that other syllables do not, and they are conveniently one syllable in length anyway. I would count quintuplets as 1-2-3-4-5- 2-2-3-4-5, etc., but how many pieces are in 5/8 time?  Steven

Steven, the piece is in 4/4, and has a measure of triplets, then a measure of quintuplets.

In college, we used "university" for quintuplets.

Steven, 1-2-3-4-2-2-3-4-3-2-3-4-4-2-3-4 is generally the way measure counting is done in ensembles, band, orch, etc. So I'd stay away from that if at all possible. Confession, I have used it this way, but try to stick with the more common 1 e and a 2 e and a 3 e and a etc.

Quarter notes - TA (Steady beat: TA TA TA TA)
Establish the steady beat (clapping) of repeated TA's to work all of the words below to see how well they factor against metric counting. Don't stop clapping, but continue to say them aloud as they change subdivisions of TA.
These are the "magic counting system" syllables I use:
Quarter notes - TA TA TA TA
Eighth notes - ti ti (ti ti ti ti ti ti ti ti)
Sixteenth notes - diddle diddle (diddle diddle diddle diddle)
Triplets - cho-co-late (cho-co-late cho-co-late cho-co-late)
Dotted eighth/sixteenth - Loooong/short (feels like limping)

I thought I explained - one is for counting measures, the other for counting sub-beats. Don't know why the former can't be used in place of the latter....though I can see why the latter might be troublesome in place of the former.
