Well, of course, when I saw a post on your blog called "Dance Music" I had to go read it! I love playing English country dances - the music just weaves in and out of itself in such delightful ways. We mostly use the Peter Barnes books here, altho I also have The Playford Ball and we use it occasionally. I also play for contra dances, and one the son of one of our fiddlers is starting cello, so we're hoping to add him to our band soon smile

Nicely written blog.

Thanks for checking it out, Cathy.

At the Glen Echo dance I mentioned, we use the Barnes books. At the other dance, we use a quirky collection that's been put together over 30 years. This other group also plays Scandinavian and "international" music.

I'm in another small group that's an offshoot of the 30-year group that's just me and three other people who live on my street. We play a little English, a little international, a little pop (Beatles, jazz standards). We've played at a few coffee-house type things. We're not very good, but it's kind of fun.

Oooo - Scandinavian laugh I've danced a lot of Scandinavian, and a friend had a little portable pump organ and we'd play fiddle and pump organ duets of Scandinavian for dancing. I haven't played any of the 15/16ths kinds of international music, but some other friends and I did play some 4/4 shottisches, Israeli, etc, quite awhile ago. Sounds like we have similar interests. I'll have to check out more of your blog smile

Great blog, Piano Again! I particularly enjoyed your entry on your college experience. I have a lot of students who are in the same situation as you were of not being ready to choose a major or make the adjustment. My daughter wants to get through high school early and start college, and I keep telling her "What's the rush?"

Monica, the odd thing about my early graduation from high school was that it was something I had not even considered but that my parents wanted. No one -- not parents, older sisters, or anyone at my high school -- ever sat down with me and asked me what I wanted or was interested in. It was definitely a "penny-wise, pound-foolish" move because I it took me seven years to get my bachelor's degree, and I ended up staying in college for a total of 20 years! Those first three years were practically wasted because I wasn't ready.

OTOH, if your daughter is really interested in something in particular, it's not necessarily a bad idea. It was just frankly stupid in my case.
