The feel of the actions on a digital piano is one of the most important things I need to consider when buying a DP. I am interested in hearing the opinions of you guys regarding Yamaha's GHS, GHE, and GH3 actions. I am curious to compare each of these to one another and also see if anyone can provide some insight on comparable actions from Roland, Kawai, and Casio. I know that the touch is somewhat a personal preference but I think it would be great to hear what you guys think.

I did go to a local Yamaha Dealer yesterday and felt the actions on the CLP330, CLP340, and CLP380. I personally found the GH3 keys on the 340 to be MUCH better then the GHE keys on the 330. That right there may have helped me decide that the CLP340 or better is the DP I will be purchasing.

I thought GH3 was much much better then the older GH's, but I ended up with a kawai mostly for the keyboard.

I actually prefer the older, non-
graded (or non-progressive) action
that was used a few yrs. back and
is found today only on the least
expensive digital pianos. This
has the same weight across
the keyboard (unlike a graded
action, which gets lighter in
the treble region, like on a
grand piano) and develops more
strength.

I used to own a Casio AP-24 console
from 2005-2006. This had a
heavy, non-graded action, and
it developed tremendous strength
in the hands. I then owned
a Korg SP-250, which had a
graded action, from 2006-2009.
This was good, but the graded
action didn't develop the
kind of strength that the
Casio did. When shopping for
my current digital, a Williams
Overture, I deliberately looked
for an economy model, because
these are the only ones today
that have the older, non-graded
action.

I agree. When I went to audition Yamahas, the GH3 was far ahead of the others. It's a very good action in my opinion, one I wouldn't mind owning if I could get on board with the Yamaha sound. Good luck on your purchase, it's a tough decision!

The key action mechanism on the CLP340, "GH3", is the same on the CLP330. The only difference is the key coverings on the white keys on the 340 is the ivorite synthetic ivory found on the grands.

Marty, is the key surface material on the CLP-340 and above exactly the same as that found on the (acoustic) grand pianos?

JTPRO, What lead you to the assumption that the 330 had GHE and the 340 had GHS? Was that info from the yamaha dealer?

According to both the Japan and Canada Yamaha sites, both 330 and 340 are equipped with GH3, except that the 340 keyboard also has the ivory feel. The 320 has the GH keyboard.

You might want to go back and try again as the CLP-340 and CLP-330 actions are identical. I actually like the standard plastic keys on the 330 better than the fancy plastic key of the 340. You might have been influenced by the "ivorite" coating on the 340.

Thank you guys.. I am sorry.. I saw so many piano's yesterday I must have got the 320 confused with the 330, and the 340 confused with the 330. I should have said above:

no, it's no big deal- and i think Marty was the one correcting that but i just wondered if the yamaha dealer has mistakenly told you this or maybe based on the ivory-like keys made that assumption.
