Hi everyone,
I live and teach in New York State. Although none of my students are serious or prepared (yet) to pursue a piano examination, I would like to make sure they are competent enough to play the music desigated for specific levels.

I was hoping someone could forward me the level requirements and songs allowed for their state's level, especially New York. That way, I would know "exactly" what pieces to assign my students and know that they are for a certain piano level.

(I have not taught long enough to find the entire manual useful and the music store I use would not allow me to copy the list of songs.)

Thank you very much!
Gisele

Are you a member of your state's music teachers association? If so, you should easily be able to obtain a copy.

In California, at least, our syllabus is copyrighted and is only available for purchase. It would be illegal to just let someone copy it.

State's level of what? Is this Solo & Ensemble Contest, or NY MTNA? In WI, our state MTNA doesn't list pieces, but composers that we can choose from, whereas the WSMA Solo/Ensemble lists specific pieces.

It's for the New York State School Music Association. I'm a member of the MTNA but not of our state association. New York listed specific pieces of music.

I can obtain a copy for a price but all I need is 2 sides and the book is thick with exam requirements for other instruments, which I do not need.

(I'm from Canada and used the Royal Conservatory of Music which covered exams for the entire country. This is my first year teaching in the United States so I am unaccustomed to having a system used for each state.)

If there is another method one can suggest I use to rank my students' piano abilities, I am open to other suggestions.

Thanks!
Gisele

I didn't think you could be a member of MTNA without joining at the state level. But you're talking about the public school music association, I think -- the affiliate of MENC. If that is the case, then your local high school music teacher is your best resource.

Either the high school music teacher(I don't know why your music store wouldn't copy it for you!!), or you can probably get a free copy from their website. That is where I get our State's lists. Also, some music vendor websites provide them.
