The Marines Hymn is a fun song to play. I'd say it's a little more difficult than it appears because of the eighth notes and the dotted quarter notes.

I am in "Why Am I Blue". Rythym is a little tricky.

I am also playing the book "Alfred Merry Christmas Book". Book start with very easy peaces but "Jingle Bell Rock" is challeging me. Mom3gram, I remember you have this book too, did you spend a long time in "Jingle Bell Rock" too?

Actually, fliper, I never got to "Jingle Bell Rock" last year, but I used my Christmas books for sight reading a couple of weeks ago, and was able to play through it slowly this year. I think that I would have struggled with it last year though. I should start really working my Christmas music now so that I can play most of the pieces smoothly by Christmas.

I found "Why Am I Blue" a little challenging too. In fact, ALL of the Blues pieces were a challenge for me due to the rythym and sometimes awkward fingering. But eventually they clicked. I even liked a few of them once I could play them well. LOL

Wow!, you're right where I am - Can-can, Marine's Hymn and Why am I Blue? Nice to know there are others with the same challenges. My teacher has me doing Etudes, too. I always know I didn't have much fine motor control, but playing the piano really brings it home...

I would like to play "I saw Mommy kissing Santa Claus" but I do not know if I will reach that piece.

Fingering is also chalenge me. I like the blues pieces. "Why am I Blue" has a good blues feeling imo.

Welcome to this thread Ed. I also like to know that someone is learning same pieces as me.

I just started playing piano in August. I live in Japan. My teacher speaks English but we're using a Japanese adult beginner's book. Just from skimming a few pages of this thread, I think Alfred's is much more advanced. We've not even done sharps and flats yet and I'm in book 2 (the books are a bit thin). I bought "Adult Piano Method" while in the UK because it was the only instruction book they had... Maybe I'll get Alfred's on amazon so I can follow along with you guys.

Hi Mary Ann. Adult Books, as Alfred Adult All-In-One I use, advance faster than children book. Level 1 start from the beginning for people that do not know anything about piano play.

I am now in "Good People". However I have to practice "Why am I Blue".

"Good People" is fingering challenge to me. From recordings posted here sounds good.

In book "Alfred Merry Christmas Book" I can play now "Jingle Bell Rock", but very slow. I started "Silver Bells". It seems easier.

I'm new to the forum but wanted to say how much I value the information here. I've been using Alfred's Basic and because of not having a teacher I added Teach Yourself to Play Piano. The added information on the dvd and mp3 songs along with the metronome settings have really helped. Thanks fliper!

I'm up to "Why am I Blue" in the Basic and "Walkin Down the Basses" in Teach Yourself

Even tho some of the songs are the same - some are in a different key and each has songs the other does not.

I'm still working on getting up to tempo - but at 71 I'm satisfied with my progress.

Fliper, Jingle Bell Rock uses an octave positioning with the left hand.

I've been somewhat working on Jerhico and that also has an octave chord with the left hand and so perhaps Jingle Bell Rock would be more suited to someone who has nearly completed the book, or in your case, you can play it, but it's a bit more difficult than the pieces in the beginning of the Christmas book.

I'm working on "I'll Be Home For Christmas", but I'm trying to add some more notes/chords with the left hand to make it sound a little fuller. For example, the first note on the left hand is an A (one note), and I'm playing it with an F chord (F, A, C).

Thanks for the information Johnny.
When you finish can you please share your notes/chords added in "I'll be Home for Christams", as i would like to try it?

Fliper, here is my amended version:

After finishing playing this piece very late this evening, it really gave me a feeling of being grateful to be learning piano.

Hello,
I'm new to this forum although on digital pianos forum I already asked for advice on DP. But anyway, I've just started, first lesson with teacher was good and now I've just with 3 hours of practice behind me. Just hand practising and since this thread comes to me I've also got Alfred's All-in-One book somewhere and started to go thorough it. Currently I usually go from the beginning and simple training up to where I've not been yet and where the "pieces" are more complex. Today I've gone a little bit more further up to the jingle bells on page 30. This just reminded me of the fact that I've not practiced well some of previous items. So this is task for next practice hour. :-)
Thanks for the nice thread!
Karel
PS: teacher recommended me to stay on our old AP (Auguste Fo"rster made in the Czechoslovakia) for an half of year min. before purchasing new DP for night training sessions.

Congratulations! You can tell Mark to add you to the list of graduates. You also can ask your teacher to fill the "Certificate of Award" in the end of the book smile

I am starting the F Major Scale to prepare "Little Brown Jug". I still need to practice "Good People"

In book "Alfred Merry Christmas Book" I am in "I saw Mommy kissing Santa Claus". Let's see if it is ready until Christmas smile
