Hi!

Which of the following key-setups creates most noises?

I believe AWA Grand Pro II makes more noise (hammers), but it’s not that bad. My neighbors aren’t complaining. smile

The PHA II action makes a slight thump noise as the key returns. The action itself is basically silent. I don't think the key noise is very noticeable if there's a TV playing or some another source of sound, but you'd hear it in a quiet room.

One poster here claimed that the PHA II was noisier than her previous Yamaha action. I'm not sure either way.

This topic was recently mentioned in another thread.

In summary, it is claimed by Alden Skinner in his new Digital Piano guide, that KAWAI's wooden-key action is quieter than equivalent actions from both Yamaha and Roland.

However, I believe it is important to point out that there is no such thing as a truly 'silent' action. Even if one were to somehow mute an acoustic piano, it would still be possible to hear the movement of the keys and hammers.

Kind regards,
James

Ahh okey, I think I have to adjust my question since I don't mean the noise itself made by the key. What I'm interested in is the noises or mainly the vibrations created from the key down to the floor etcetera. In my opinion these are the noises which may disturb your neighbours. I have a Roland FP7 myself and I think it creates a lot of vibrations

Ah, I see.

Well, that's a separate matter, and one that I believe this is largely related to the amount of vibration that is sent from the instrument, through the stand, and into the floor.

What kind of stand do you have for your FP7? It may be possible to add some form of foam or rubber to absorb vibrations between the instrument and the stand, and the stand and the floor.

I have to say though, unless you have extremely thin walls, I doubt it will be possible to hear/feel the vibrations in neighbouring rooms or apartments.

Cheers,
James

When you're playing hard it's not only the vibrations created by the key, it is also the fact that the whole piano with all its weight will create vibrations to the floor. I don't know if this can be noticed in the apartment beneath, but I would not be surprised if this is the case.

If you get a console-type piano (e.g. HP-207) tan this would not be a problem. You're only seeing this because the stage piano and stand are so light.
