I just finished reading "Grand Obsesssion". And I'm thinking about my own responses to piano. It has occurred to me that when I play my piano at night I find it is much more moving compared to when I practice during the day. Does anyone else have this experience? Any ideas why it feels so different to hear music at night?

Ann, listening to music can be either a passive or active encounter. Perhaps, when you're practicing, you're focused on problem solving, so the enjoyment of the instrument is a secondary consideration, where as in the evening, you are "playing" thus enjoying your instrument in a different way.

And speaking of books, "Beethoven's Hair" is a must read.

Another fun read, similar to Grand Obsession, is "The Piano Shop on the Left Bank." It, too, is about a search for the right instrument and return to piano playing.

John, Thanks for the reading suggestions. I read "The Piano Shop on the Left Bank" so long ago...it's time to re-read it especially now that I've returned to piano (after many years focused on another instrument).

Ann, I have the same experience and have often wondered if others have. For me, there is a distinct difference between the two times. I'm thinking that part of the reason might be that I'm just more tired at night. Even if I am practicing at night rather than just "playing", I find that my focus is more relaxed and less...analytical. I sometimes think that the darkness outside contributes to it, too. It just seems more romantic I guess...I really enjoy playing at night.

Yes, for me there is a dramatic difference, kind of a night time openness...a connection with eternity...hard to describe. Thanks for your comments...it's nice to know that you too have this experience.
