Do any of you give out progress reports at the end of the semester or year? If so, what do they include? What do they look like? Do you have some type of rating system?

Or do you do conferences with parents? Are these free of charge?

Any comments along these lines would be helpful.

Thank you!

Years ago I did give out progress reports for my students, twice per year. I stopped doing so because parents really did not care about them. Parents told me they would much rather have on-going communication with me about how their children were progressing. So I picked up the phone more often to chat with them. People were hard to get ahold of. That was before emailing. What I do now is email parents on a monthly basis (or more frequently if there are concerns) about their childrens' progress. I do not use a formal progress report per se, I just write how the child is doing from my perspective and encourage feedback from home.

I just did this for the first time. Instead of "progress reports" per say, I typed letters home (but sent them via email) to the parents/students regarding the coming school year. I congratulated them on certain accomplishments but spend the majority of the letter spelling out my goals for them in the coming year. Most of the letters discussed the strengths and weaknesses of each student and how we'd continue building those, etc. One letter gave an ultimatum for a student and although I've had several conversations with the parents, this letter seemed to do the trick - I haven't had a problem since!

The school where I teach piano requires annual progress reports which we distribute in June. The form provides a rated checklist: Excellent, Good, Improvement Needed, Unsatisfactory pertaining to the student's progress, interest, effort, home preparation, and cooperation. There is also space for specific comments and recommendations, as well as any short term and long term goals.

I usually check the appropriate boxes and write a paragraph on the back of the sheet discussing successes and areas to be strengthened.

Although I do chat with my students and their parents or email their parents weekly/bi-weekly, some parents really appreciate having that tangible record of their child's progress; plus, I find the progress reports most helpful in focusing on goals for the next semester.

From time to time, I just cut the lesson short by five minutes and walk with the student out to the car and have a quick chat with mom/dad.
