I don't know the significance of the Class 3 designation, but it is probably safe to assume that, at the very least, it not anything derogatory. If it were, you could be sure that it would have been very quickly pointed out by the experts on this forum.

BTW, a friend of mine lives in a beautiful home situated on the side of a mountain off Rt.22 in Hillsdale. He has amazing views oh the Berkshires.

Thanks for the congrats. Seems like no one (including Steinway NY) knows what the 1902 "Class 3" designation meant in it's time.

I live in Copake, the next town south of Hillsdale. The area betweent the Berkshire Mountains of Mass and the Taconic Range of NY. A great area to live.

I believe the first year of the "O" was 1901 or 1902 wink

Thanks for the info. How much would you say a newly restored 1902 O in Mahogany is worth in today's market?

nylawbiz,

Since the restorer's who post here have not answered your question, I'll tell you what I know. According to their website, a NYC restorer is asking in the "High 40's".

Congratulations on getting a wonderful piano at a great price! Don't let the small stuff bother you-- what matters is how it sounds and plays, and the joy it will bring you to see it and play every day in your home!

Wow. Really? I guess there's a lot of depreciation during the first 20 years after restoration. Thanks for the info.

There is a big range in prices(and quality) for rebuilt pianos in different parts of the country and different dealerships. Earlier in the thread, it was mentioned that a dealer in upstate NY was advertising O's for around 27K.

Plover,

That makes sense. I would imagine that retail rent in NYC (Manhattan) must be substantially more than upstate NY. This is, of course, only an example. I have no knoweledge of what one dealer's actual costs are relative to another dealer. Although, one can easily obtain the average cost per square foot of retail space for a given area.
As for the quality of rebuilds, every re-builder claims their work, parts selection, etc. as being among the very best if not the best. I don't recall any rebuilder who boasts inferior work but at a lower cost to the consumer.

Well, decided to give the piano a go. Delivery is schedule for Thursday morning. We re-arranged our livingroom this evening. Not so easy figuring where to put the piano. I presume the lid should open to the room, with some of the sound being bounced off the lid, and projected into the room. That's how it's supposed work, right?

Grands usually sound best when they project at an angle down the long axis of a room. Positioning a grand thay way also eliminates standing waves - when projected sound waves collide with reflected ones.
