Hello everyone!

I'm kinda new here and I was wondering about the digital pianos that I'm canvasing in the market, can anybody help me with what they think about these Digital Pianos? (Touch Response, Their Hammer weighted Keys, the sound quality/brilliance, does the pedal have the "half-damper effect" feature, potential problems/errors that might occur in the future, etc...)

- Casio PX-110
- Yamaha Clavinova CVP-55

I expect ilovekawai (great name by the way...) is searching for a used instrument. However, I am inclined to agree - other than perhaps the Casio, the other instruments are rather old (that Yamaha is positively ancient by DP standards).

When purchasing second hand, my recommendation would be to stick with current generation or one generation previous. Using the above models this would be:

- KAWAI ES4
- Casio PX-120
- Yamaha CVP-4xx / CVP-3xx

I bought my first digital piano
back in 1989, and even way back
then there were weighted-key
digitals that performed
like an acoustic piano, and
so buying a used digital piano
is no problem at all. In
fact, used digitals are the
best value around. Digital
pianos are essentially a computer
with a keyboard and speakers,
and because of this digital nature,
they lose value fast, like a
used pc. A ten year old dp,
like a 10 yr. old pc, is going
to be worth little, maybe a
couple of hundred dollars,
but it will play similar to
a brand new dp costing thousands.

Any of the three dp's you listed
would be fine. Test all 88
keys with and without the right
pedal. Offer half of the asking
price or less. These are
worth only a couple of hundred
dollars, because of their
digital nature. But they'd
play similar to brand new
digitals.

Hi Folks,

What is wrong with buying an older Dp, especially if all you require are a few good piano sounds? As Gyro states, you can get an old(er) DP which may have great sounds and probably at a greatly reduced price. One may have to lay down a LOT of cash to get great piano sounds from a current DP. I wouldn't hesitate in buying a Yamaha P-80 if the asking price were right!

go with the latest models from the years they were made. Yamaha CVP400 series would be good.

I'm new to this forum and looking for help with piano decision also-so please forgive non-informed question??? I purchased a Yamaha DGX-500 several years ago. Long story short I was a workaholic who "thought" I could start taking piano lessons again (been very long time so it will be starting over)but time never allowed. Working situation has changed and I'm ready to begin lessons. The Yamaha hasn't even been out of the box. Should I try to sell and purchase an updated model? If so, what would be comparable or better for the adult beginner? FYI-I orginally purchased the DGX-500 on a whim (at Costco) without any research as it looked like a good deal at the time. Thanks for any help!

Thanks for the compliment! I really do Love Kawai Pianos (technically I'm saving cash for me to buy a Kawai upright) so for now I'm looking for a used DP, thanks also for the info!

Well Not exactly, I have been just reading some ads on the buy and sell section(used and/or 2nd hand pianos) and I saw these 3 digital pianos are for sale. I'm just being meticulous so I won't have regrets in the future; So I asked our members here for their advises and opinions.

I have a PX110, which I value greatly for the touch response! I've tried many midi controllers (and a few DPs) and for the price it's unbeatable!

Notice that I'm ONLY talking about the touch response (touché if you want) and nothing else. The sounds bundled with the PX110 are nothing special, the velocity curve is excellent, the rest of the features are mediocre at best! But I didn't care, since I would use it as a midi controller, with VST instruments, thus my review.

I can't speak for the rest, but in all truth such old DPs might even have problems at midi connections, and other outdated features... And if you're looking for a used one, maybe it's worth looking harder for a newer model...

unfortunately, DGX500 doesn't even have decent weighted action, not like piano's anyway. so, if you're thinking of learning to play piano rather than play keyboard, then sell this and get a DP with proper weighted action. for Yamaha DGX/YPG series, the top one DGX630 (or YPG635) is the only one with weighted action (though entry level graded hammer action). it's about $800 new. for cheaper and good DP, you can look at Casio PX130.

I'll second the above. I've a beginner shopping for a DP too. I'm taking piano at a local collage. I play on a Roland with light un-weighted action a Kawai DP that has a very nice keyboard and just a couple days ago on an acoustic grand with rather stiff action. I'm not yet a very good judge of keyboads but already I see that I might want to practice one that is a little heavier

The other thing I learned is that no DP can simulate the "feel" of an acoustic simply because every acoustic piano is different. Not all of the acoustic pianos are in perfect condition either. In fact it may be that many DPs have "better" action then the well used practice grand pianos in a typical collage music department that see 12+ hours of use per day.

The YPG635 and other Yamahas that use the same "GHS" keyboard mechanism all have the same light feel. In the Yamaha line I think you have to move up to a p-155 to get the better "GHE" keyboard mechanism. The $1,200 P155 is, I think, the lowest priced GHS equipted Yamaha.

Other brands may get into the better keyboard mechanism as lower price points

Re the weighting of Yamaha's graded hammer boards, it can be difficult to separate touch from tone. In this thread, Marty Flinn and Alden seem to be saying that there's no difference, except for an additional weighting zone and that there are differences with the Natural Action.(Alden writes the Digital Pianos section for Acoustic and Digital Piano Buyer.)
