Hey Wiz -- good to see you in this jazzy part of town.
When I am away from the piano, I listen to one of 3 stations that I set up on Pandora. My stations are Bill Evans, Wynton Kelly, and Ellis Marsalis. Of course, many other artists will play on those stations. They have a similar style that I just love!
What I do is record it while it is playing and put it on my mp3 player. So, when I am away from home, my favorite music is with me.

I'm listening to Michel Camilo's album Rendezvous. He plays an interesting version of Caravan. I'm still trying to get my head around swing. When I'm finally confident that I can play swing in the pocket, I'm going to study the Latin rhythm of Caravan. Michel has amazing chops. As well, he plays a beautiful ballad called Rememberance.

hey Barb, back in PW now, and I got a recorder so I may finally do that version of Round Midnite! Or perhaps some other surprises...
I find the jazz radio stations are very hit and miss, here in Canada there's one national public radio station and they canceled the late night jazz show. I find it's best to just get the music online and you can listen to whatever you want.
NPR Jazz is great though, lots of cool shows.

Wiz -- Glad you finally have a recorder. I do need to hear your Round Midnite. I haven't played that one in a while.
Online jazz is the only way to go for me. Which online station do you like? I love Pandora.com. It's free, and I can tell it the type of jazz I want to hear. Plus, a little history is given about the performer.

As I was cooking dinner and listening to the Pandora station, I heard some fantastic playing. I ran to the computer. It was Bill Charlap playing "One Morning in May". I clicked on his bio and here it is:
Bill Charlap Biography Bill Charlap is one of the strongest mainstream jazz pianists on the scene and one of the most gifted interpreters of standards. He grew up in a musical household, as the son of Broadway songwriter Moose Charlap and singer Sandy Stewart. Taking to the piano at a young age, he went on to study at New York's High School of Performing Arts. He then entered college, but rather than finishing, opted to practice and gig on his own. Pianist Bill Mays soon took up Charlap's cause, recommending the young man as his replacement in the Gerry Mulligan Quartet. During this time, Charlap also worked with Benny Carter, Clark Terry, and Frank Wess, and was sought after as an accompanist for singers such as Tony Bennett, Carol Sloane, and Sheila Jordan. In 1995, he secured one of the most coveted piano chairs in jazz, with the Phil Woods Quintet.
All the while, Charlap showed steady development as a leader. His debut came in 1994 with Along with Me, followed by Souvenir in 1995 and Distant Star in 1996. His 1997 release, All Through the Night, was the first to feature his current trio, with the redoubtable (and unrelated) Washingtons, Peter and Kenny, on bass and drums respectively. In 2000, this lineup had its major-label breakthrough with the highly acclaimed Blue Note disc Written in the Stars. Two albums appeared in 2001: 2Gether with Warren Vaché and Contrasts with Jon Gordon. 'S Wonderful hit the shelves in 2002, as did Stardust, which began a series of albums that focused on a single composer. Stardust featured the music of Hoagy Carmichael, 2004's Somewhere was an all-Leonard Bernstein affair, while 2005's Plays George Gershwin featured ten songs by the man Charlap considers "the American soul." 2005 saw the release of an album with Sandy Stewart, Love Is Here to Stay. Two years later, Charlap released Live at the Village Vanguard. ~ David R. Adler, All Music Guide -------------------------
Unfortunately, dinners don't get prepared very quickly around here. LOL

Haven't heard of Pandora but I will check it out! NPR has a huge archive of live jazz shows, so that is a favourite site.
Bill Charlap is pretty well known in the jazz world, and actually his wife is another great player, from my city too!
Her name is Renee Rosnes, she plays beautifully. They are doing duo concerts and coming up for the jazz festival.

Also, Pandora was available in Canada, but no longer. International copywrite laws got in the way. edit: I see that yes, she has remarried. Thanks google!

Thanks Barb! You got me hooked on/into Pandora now! Have you created a Radio Station? If you like a tune that is playing, there is an area where you can click the to the right of the word "menu". That song will be played again for you at another time. Of course, if you don't like a tune, click the "thumbs down" button to the left of "menu". You won't hear that tune again. Listening to jazz is a very important part when learning how to improvise. Barb

You are having too much fun CMohr. The trick is to listen when you absolutely can't practice. Let's see --- listen while cooking, eating, doing household chores. Luckily, I have external speakers that can fill the house with Pandora station music. It adds excitement to mundane household duties.

Hello all, A few months ago, I talked about moving to a new house and using the new space to gather musicians. Well the move is over, and on the request of my teacher who said "just put an ad on Craiglist", I posted an ad. I had amazing feedback. I played with a bass player this week, we had a blast. I have a guitarist next week, a trombone next week end and a drummer the week after. I'm booked This is really interesting because now it feels like it's for real. I have a list of tunes I told everybody I can play (AL, ATTYA, Blue Bossa, Cantaloup, What is this thing, etc..), so now I actually have to keep up that repertoire My practice routine is a little off since then, and I know soon enough I'm gonna have to learn some new stuff. But I'll manage. I will keep you updated, but for those of you who aren't quite sure how to find friends to play with (because your existing friends can't tell Parker from Coltrane), and for those who don't live in remote parts of the world (say Sidney), use Craigslist.

That is so cool! I bet you're having a blast! The only other people I know who play are drummers (mostly conga, etc.). You never know, maybe we'll be hearing from the Knotty jazz trio in the very near future! Hope so!

Knots, your new house sounds awesome, it sounds like the reason you moved was so that you could host the band ! Please post some recordings if you like the trombonist. I'm really into the trombone now that I've been singing along to Louis Armstrong. Kid Ory in The Last Time plays an amazing solo, and I really love his harmonics as well.
Barb Please invite me for dinner one day.

Jazzwee, Interesting you say that. The bass player I played with last week seemed convinced I'm much better than he is. Evidently he wasn't paying attention. I'm amazed at how many people lack the confidence. But that goes away immediately as you start playing. I have to say the guy I played with happened to also be extremely nice, so that adds to the fun. I want to turn this into a Wednesday night event, like a poker night, but where you play music. You should really give it a shot and see what you think. Will be a good way to throw away all the theory and see what comes out. You have plenty of repertoire already, and most bass players will not keep up ATTYA at 200 bpm C_A, I love my new house. I used to be in a townhouse (rowhouse), and I would have never dared inviting a drummer over, or even a horn player. Now I feel I have no excuse. That trombone probably won't work out so great, mainly because of schedule, but we shall see. This Wednesday I have an Alto and bass coming over. That will have to be fun! Obviously the main reason for my post was to show off, but who knows, maybe it will trigger something with some of you

Hello Knotty you show-off ! I have to admit that sometimes I have trouble distinguishing the sound of the sax from the clarinet ! Do you remember if Johnny Dodds is playing the clarinet or the alto sax in The Last Time ? And for some Sidney Bechet I can't tell very well if he is playing the clarinet or the soprano sax. I love acoustic bass.

Way to go Knotty! I really am excited for you. New house, weekly gigs. You may have to list your place in the "Live Piano Music Venues" thread in the Non Classical Forum. If possible, could you record some day and post it here? Barb

But I can't commit the time to regular playing with a group quite yet (too busy). In the meantime, I'm just building my skills. My only proof that I know I can survive playing in a group is my teacher playing with me. Used to be a scary thing but not anymore. Uses less brain cells. But still the confidence is not there yet. Keep us up to date and the showing off is good because it serves the purpose of encouragement for the rest of us.

Knots I wish I had jazz infused into me as a child. I think it's great that you were thinking Lester Young before you were a teenager. My parents only had classical on and my friends are only into pop and rock. In the last year I started from zero listening to jazz. I can't get enough of it.
