How about Do you? or variations there of?
Do you take your rings off before you play the piano?
When I got my high school ring, it was the first ring I had and being much thinner then, I found that I didn't like the weight of it when I played the piano. So I would take it off before I played. That became my habit. After returning to the piano 41 years later, I still take my rings off before I start playing.

I asked this same question not long ago. I usually leave my rings on though.

I've actually lost about 25 pounds and my gold nugget ring that I ware on my right ring finger is starting to roll because my finger is thinner. I’m thinking about having it resized at a jewelry shop.

I know this is OT, but I feel a lot better since I have started exercising and losing weight. My blood pressure is almost perfect and my total cholesterol is actually below normal (thanks to Crestor and the exercising).

If I can brag on my weight loss just a little, here is one on my YT videos about 8 months ago compared to a recent one. A big difference.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ng4TKv9DOBQ (235 pounds)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vTti770hCCI (208 pounds)

My goal is to get down to 180 pounds.

Sorry for the OT… but the ring question prompted the weight-loss discussion.

Take care,

Rick

If I think of it, I'll take off my right hand ring (never my wedding ring heart ) and my gold bracelet before recording something, to prevent extraneous clinking noises, but I don't bother if I'm not playing for posterity.

It depends which wedding ring I'm wearing that day. The one with the diamond on it comes off because it turns and gets in the way. The smaller band stays on and I wear that one on piano lesson days so I don't have to worry about taking the bigger one off and forgetting it.

I also like to play barefoot. At my new teacher's recommendation, I'm trying to remember to take off my watch too.

I've often played in my nightgown and on really hot days I've been known to...well I'll leave that to your imagination. blush

I keep my rings on but my teacher did suggest to me that I might want to take them off if they are distracting. So far they haven't really bothered me while playing. I do take my watch off at nearly every lesson and often when I practice at home.

I can't stand to play for one measure with rings on. The clacking noise is a pain. I often wonder how Liberace managed with all that hardware.

The Liberace crack was tongue in cheek. I actually wear only one ring - an claddagh wedding band. I've never taken it off.

I only wear one ring on each hand and I rarely remove them. I realized that my comment about a watch kind of dates me. Seems that very few people who are under 30 years old wear a watch. I work at a university and I would guess that no more than 1 in 10 students wears a watch - it's probably more like 1 in 20. I train students to run scientific instruments that have very large superconducting magnets (similar to MRIs) so I have to specifically ask them that they remove their watch if they are wearing one.

Too quick for me! wink That was DO YOU #2
Do you put your shoes (or sandles) on to play the piano?
I've never liked the feel of the pedal on my feet without shoes. I can drive barefoot (although I don't because I think that is illegal)but I always have shoes on when I play piano.

I play barefoot most of the time, but occasionally with socks on (it's getting cold these days). But always take the shoes off before I play.

[Like knightplayer, I also drive barefoot quite alot, but I think that is legal in this country smile ]

There are no laws against driving barefoot in the U.S., though it's a longstanding and apparently widely held misconception that it's illegal.

Barefoot if at home. I can't stand to play with rings on, with the exception of my 10th anniversary band (it's a very small, simple gold band with no stones). In fact, I actually asked for this for a 10th anniversary present because my wedding/engagement rings bugged me when I'm working or playing the piano and I wanted something I would never have to take off. The single diamond stone isn't that big but it sticks up and bugs me.

I always play with my wedding band and engagement rings on (they are like a nesting set kind of, isn't that what that's called?) I never wear rings on my right hand.

If I'm practicing early in the morning, say in my jammies (something I used to do in Japan a lot, not so much these days unfortunately) and I start to play, I notice right away if I don't have my rings on, and I will usually get up and get them before continuing to play.

I usually take my watch off, but I haven't noticed it when I forget.

Shoes... with the piano that I had in Japan, maybe something about the height the pedal was off of the floor? I was always fine playing shoeless. But with my digital here, I don't like the angle and have recently been wanting to play with shoes on. We have a no outdoor-shoes indoors rule, so I have been playing barefooted but I may try to find some simple slip on thingies. I think my foot is at too much of an angle. Can't really explain it I guess!

Does anyone paint their finger nails? I knew someone in Japan who would play with red fingernails. Her nails were short, but colorful. There is no way I could do that! Also, I don't even think I would want to have clear polish on, no shiny-ness please!

I never take my rings off - they don't get in the way at all. Besides, I couldn't get my wedding ring off if I wanted to or my class ring either. I have a promise ring that will come off but it stays on my L pinkie always. heart

Shoes or slippers in winter, barefoot or flip-flops in summer. I like barefoot, too!

And I never wear a watch - they don't like me - always end up exploding off my wrist or just plain dying. laugh

Knightplayer, I tried to PM you with instructions on how to quote but it was rejected.

You can either push the "quote" button or surround the words you want to highlight with this: [quote] blah blah blah then [forwardslash quote]Make sure you use the right kind of brackets. I always preview my post to make sure I did it right.

And Steven is correct about laws in the US against driving barefoot. That's a urban myth. Years ago my driver's ed teacher even told us to drive barefoot if we were at all drowsy. It's not illegal to drive barefoot.

Deborah- Thanks for the info- I'm still learning- No clue on why the PM was rejected
For me, rings off, shoes on, watch on (how else do you know when its time to leave for work?)
Pajamas? Not for me. Fully dressed. We have full length windows each side of the door in clear view of the piano (and you never know who will show up at your front door)
DO YOU play better early in the morning or in the evening?
I usually play better in the morning. In the evening, I'm either extremely good or extremely bad depending on how the day went.
Julius

I do not remove my (small) wedding ring to play nor do I necessarily remove my shoes. I have played barefoot at times. I also occasionally drive barefoot. Usually when I take my son to school and don't have to work until later, I just get out of bed, put on some pants, grab the keys and go. No, I do not believe that it is illegal to do so. It might, though, be illegal to drive without pants. grin

Check your profile preferences, Julius; it's possible that you need to adjust your profiel to allow PMs. (Go to "My Stuff" and then "Edit Profile", I think, or maybe it's "Profile Preferences." I forget which.)

I play noticeably better ealy in the morning. I get up really early - like 4 a.m. and try to get in 2-3 hours before I go to work and try to get in another 1-2 hours after I get home. Sometimes I'll take a short nap before the evening practice session.
