It means you've probably worn through the top coat in that area. Yes, there are metal polishes you can use to polish them back up, but you'll need to add some sort of clear coat if you don't want the pedal to tarnish again almost immediately.

Pedal booties would have solved your problem from the start.

Pedal booties would have solved your problem from the start. Are there any good quality ones? I think they might look nice anyway, but the only ones I got once(which I think were quite common) were extremely flimsy felt things with ties that didn't last long at all. They were cheap, but I'd rather find high quality ones. I can't have a BB wearing Tom McCann.

My piano's sustain and soft pedals got all cloudy looking (and are starting to again) but I polished it right back up with some kind of brass/metal polish... I'll have to look up the name (it was something similar to Brasso). Apparently they got cloudy because of the oils on my skin from playing barefoot all the time.
