When my students are around level 2 of the Piano Adventures series I begin to supplement with several books.

Developing Artist series - original classical pieces that at the Prep level, for the most part, stay within the 5-finger pattern range. MUCH easier than Celebration series Prep level.

Expressive Etudes - (FJH) Again, original classical pieces.

Snell Etude Series

Snell Repertoire series - similar to the Developing Artist series but he has the books divided into Baroque/Classical in one book, and then Romantic/Contemporary; DA has all in one book.

Hats Off to You - wonderful duet book by Melody Bober. 6 songs about different hats: Sombrero, Secret Agent, Cowboy, Pirate, Baseball, Clown.

Just For Fun - (Bober) Wonderful pieces that sound 'bigger' and more complicated than they really are.

Fantastic Fingers - (C Goldston) lev 1-5

In Recital w/Jazz & Blues - lev 1-5

I would also suggest teaching him to improvise or 'comp'. I have a group of 11 year olds this year who are learning how to read chord symbols, particularly when used in worship songs at church. I print out the lyrics of a particular song with the corresponding chords listed above the lyrics. They sing the song while playing RH chords and a LH bass line. A great way to learn how to accompany a band. I'm also doing this with Christmas songs (Frosty the Snowman, Jingle Bells).

I have had students who I thought were really quick and moved them forward a little faster than I should have. They ended up getting sort of stuck on the harder material and stalling out for a while - so I have learned my lesson. It's probably better to let them have their achievements, and make sure things are covered well. I tend to use a lot of different materials, according to what each child needs and responds too, and what excites them at the moment. Lately, I have been trying a lot of the Christopher Norton America Popular Piano - and most kids have really enjoyed that. I also like some of the early classic books. I have been using some of the Celebrity Series too but agree that it takes a while to get to even the introductory level. I have a 9 year old boy who loves the Snell Sonatinas. Not difficult, has a lot of different techniques, but feels rather grown up.
Working on:
Chopin: Barcarolle
Schubert: Sonata D959
Rachmaninoff: Daisies
Lutoslawski: Paganini Variations for 2 pianos

I find the editing in the Snell series to be highly lacking. There are so many disagreements with my urtext editions, especially in Bach.

I love the Celebration Series! You can start using the Intro level with PA2A. You just have to plan carefully how you incorporate the pieces.

Carol: those are some good points, and I understand what you mean. It's a pendulum swing between offering challenges and making sure they have successes as well. Right now, I've decided to continue working with him on our original goal of finishing Book 2 by Christmas. I've just given him a little bit extra in the book for now since he already understands the concepts being introduced. I explained to him the reason I was doing this was so we could stay on track for our goal.

Minniemay: That's good to know. PA2A is roughly Book 3 of Hal Leonard, so once we finish Book 2, I can get him into Celebration Series. I'll take a look at that Intro level and see if it would be OK to just jump right in, or if we should have a few pieces in between to span the gap.
