Hi,
A student told me that her parent wants to make a CD of her playing Christmas carols. Parent is planning to give copies of this CD to all in the audience at our upcoming holiday recital.
Your thoughts please...?

I could see her wanting to give copies to family members, but everyone in the audience? That sounds bizarre.
I'd say 'no'.

Very odd indeed. What makes someone thing that others want a CD of another child playing the piano?

1) Do we know why the parents and student want to gift all the other pianists in the recital with her CD? Does this student know most of your other students already?
2) Is this student a very musical student with many songs to play?
3) Does this parent do CD's easily because she has the equipment?
Would she will able to make a CD of all students in your recital?
Would you want her to volunteer to do this?
4) Does her giving a gift to everyone set a precedent in your studio that you don't want to set about gift giving?

What might be an easy way to tell her no: Wouldn't it be a copyright infringement to make multiple CDs of these pieces for public distribution (unless they were all public-domain compositions/arrangements)? Love it, thanks. I may have to do this. The student is the one who told me about the CD giveaway. I haven't talked with her parents yet; wanted to see what you all had to say first. Thanks for the advice, this is a new one for me.

She is a new-comer to my studio. I will ask Mom or Dad about this at student's next lesson and then tell them I think they should not give out CD's to folks at the recital. Such a CD would be perfect for family members and close friends, though. That's what I'll tell them.

Speaking of which, you all recall the previous thread on this topic. I put on the bottom of the Harvest Festival program a short note to the effect that "US Copyright Laws permit making videos of your own student only. Please do not video other students in this recital." And I verbally announced that we didn't make the rules, but that our Congressman and two Senators both voted for this, so if they didn't like it, please take it up with them. Which got some nervous laughs.

What if he says, "ok, help me find songs that are in the public domain, so I can annoy the hell out of the other parents with my boorish behavior hand out CD's that are perfectly legal." You could mention that as an issue, but the main thing is it's really not appropriate top push your kid on other parents at an event where they're really there to listen to their own child.

LOL I agree. Although, it might be a kind of thing she could give to nursing homes in the area so they can show it to the residents. Of course, going there and playing live for them would be even better. But I doubt any other parent would want to see someone else's kid unless they were really, really good. As a gift to the teacher? Sure! Because we have a vested interest in the child. So, perhaps think of alternatives as to what they can do with it as a nice way of saying "no".

You're right, of course. I was trying to be passive (and avoid trying to be their etiquette "educator").  Adding the part about public domain was for us -- for the parent, I would keep it simple and just mention copyright issues. (I've yet to figure out how to do those quote within a quote posts.)
