I am thinking of dismantling and disposing of the old player piano I own. We've had it many years, but with the kids grown and gone, it hasn't been used much at all in the past 5 years.

I had my upright Autopiano (circa 1920; serial # 148062) assessed back in 2004. The player piano specialist put a value of $100-300 on it because of its poor condition. It would need $1500-2500 of work, at that time, to restore it.

I have since contacted numerous people/places and offered it away for free, if someone will come take it. There has been no interest. Before I continue with my plan to dismantle and dispose of the piano, could you tell me if I should salvage any of the parts? Might there be other owners who might be seeking as replacement parts any of this particular model? Are the keys real ivory and should we salvage those at least (and then do what with them??

Thanks for any advice you might be able to offer!

Have you tried asking local piano technicians?
I think this is neat, this person makes furniture and coat racks from parts. Piano desk
A woodworking or metal shop program might be interested?

Thank you! I will get in touch with some local craftspeople -- the piano desk site was inspiring!

And thanks for the idea of posting on Mechanical Music Digest forum!
