I want to make sure to give a special call-out to all the First Time Recipients of the Order of the Red Dot! Congratulations on your submission, and I hope you had an enjoyable time taking part in the recital. I look forward to hearing more from all of you. smile

Kalai, Larry, and Jordy: I commented on your pieces under my “new age pieces” commentary, posted somewhere above.

18 – Todd Vance: I’m not normally a big sonatina fan, but I really liked this one. The second movement (? I think it was the second movement) had some cool minor key chord changes that sounded very appealing. Impressive effort and playing!

20 – salzdt:Welcome to the nirvana/purgatory of the Red Dot (which state it is depends on whether you’ve just gotten a decent or bad take. laugh ). Your Q3 recording sounds great, and the Schubert piece flows smoothly and serenely.

35 – Jillian: Welcome to the forum, Jillian, and welcome to AB recitals! I love slow, dreamy pieces like your Morning Prelude, and your pedaling sounds great. (Warning: Pedaling is addictive. I should know.)

40 – CMohr: I enjoyed your Mazurka. All those ornamentations sounded very tough, but you did a great job of rattling them off while keeping on pace.

54 – MaryBee: I’m going to have to confess that I got all excited when I first saw your entry, because I thought you were playing a piece by the same name off the new Einaudi album. whome But this Debussy fellow ain’t too bad, either. wink You do a good job of conveying the somewhat wistful tone of the piece, and I really liked that deep bass note at the end.

I am listening slowly (since am also preparing for a midterm exam!) but really enjoying all the music!

Thank you everyone, for your comments about my piece. It's great to get such a postive response after so long away from recording and sharing.

44. Euan Morrison - I'm Going to Make a Cake
Wow, wonderful performance! At one point I had that score book in my cart at Amazon, I will have go back and get it now. Have you worked on anything else from the Hours?

56. rustyfingers - Elves' Dance - Elverdans (Alfedanse) - Elfentanz, Lyric Pieces, Op. 12 No. 4.
I can see those elves dancing, you're making them dance! Very lovely.

53. Mateusz 'Mati' Papiernik - Tooi hi no Kizuato
I'm not familiar with this music, but you play it very well. Someone asked about the title, I believe it is 遠い日の傷痕 without knowing the anime that this song comes from (and whether or not there are any lyrics which might influence the meaning) a sort of a direct translation might be "The scar from a far-away day," or better might be "pain from a day long gone"

16. Sandy Moore - Hills of Purple Heather Very nice! Is this a song (i.e. with actual lyrics)? I'm not familiar with it, but the melody is very clear and singing. Wonderful performance!

24. kawaigirl1 - Like the wind
I am not familiar with this artist, who is he? The music reminds me of some of the pieces in the Yiruma scorebook. It's wonderful to hear your performance of it!

I can't tear myself away!!!

25. Carl Mc - Piano Sonata No. 14 OP 27/2 1st Mvt (Moonlight Sonata) Wonderful! I started this piece many years ago, and didn't get very far with it. Listening to you play it makes me want to take out the score again and really commit to learning it. You asked for feedback, so here are my thoughts... I think you play this piece very very well. So all that's left is to make it an expression of your thoughts, your soul. To do that, you need to know what you want to say, and it may take some experimenting to figure that out. Try to work on dynamics, add a little more shading. Maybe think about some parts as being whispered, and others getting more insistant. Also, I think your tempo is good, but consider adding a little more... caressing? Where you ease into a note/phrase (is this just an obscure way of saying rubato??) I think this piece should have a sense of drama (melodrama, but subtle) and it takes great control over a piece to bring that into it. I think you have that control, so you might now try going overboard in terms of dynamics, rubato and that sort of thing. Play it a few times where you exaggerate those elements (dynamics, rubato) so much that it's almost yucky. Then scale that back and I think you'll have some ideas about how you want to play this piece. Also, even if you're not playing the other movements, you might listen to them and think about where this piece fits into that larger whole. Then when you play this movement, think of it as a part of a larger expression. Don't know if any of this is helpful, but there it is.

26. Triryche (Rich) - In God's Hands Wonderful rendition!!

48. TX-Dennis (Dennis Turner) - Suicide Is Painless
Very nice performance! It can be hard to do songs, without the lyrics sometimes they sound a little lacking, like somethings missing. But this arrangement and your performance don't have any of that. Bravo!

Yes, I wrote this Larry. It was so incredible. I have been working so hard on Chords, Improvising, Reading, etc., etc., runs and then I sat down and said to myself, stop trying to sound like everyone else and see what comes out....and this is it! It truly is a beautiful melody and many have told me write words to it, but I definately will NOT do that, because I want my music to tell the listener's story, not mine.

Thank you for the compliment.

I feel a bit weird about giving advice on these recital pieces, only because I'm a beginner and can't possibly give any professional advice in terms of the quality of playing, but I am very, very impressed with EVERYONE's submittals.

This has been so much fun.

Thanks for all involved in getting this set-up. thumb

Comments continued:

33. ten left thumbs - Clair de Lune
TLT, that was beautiful. Nice touch, sensitive expression and timing. Great job!

42. Andy Mann - Manndrew - Time On My Hands
Andy, that was superb. Wonderful dynamics. I would consider trying to play it, but, to me, it would be a lifetime project.

48. TX-Dennis (Dennis Turner) - Suicide Is Painless
I listened to your piece several times. You have captured the feeling of the song quite nicely – I have visions of choppers with wounded drifting through my head. Really. Well done. BTW, I really like the jazzstandards.com site.

62. SteveMac - Prelude Op. 28 No. 7
Steve, wonderful composition to pick, great job on your part. You are certainly progressing well for a person who has only been playing for six months. Hope you continue to progress and participate.

63. DragonPianoPlayer - Prelude in E Minor (Op 28 No 4)
What a beautiful piece of music! There seems to be profound tension and release in every line. I really liked your playing – very moving.

To all the Chopin players:

I never try to play Chopin (because I’m lazy and a poor reader) and don’t usually listen to his music, but whenever there is a recital I am reminded of the power of his music. Thanks.

Hi Shiro, thanks for taking the time to listen and comment. I've been looking at a couple of other pieces from the Hours soundtrack, but often they have the 3 against 2 rhythm which I am not very good at. My recital piece had about 3 measures of it at the end, so I kinda got away with it.

The one piece I would really, really like to learn is the title track, 'The Hours'. Sounds fantastic, especially the middle section. But difficult!

14. Kalai1/Chris - Leo O Kapo (voice of the night)
Chris – nice tune. I like the way you just jumped right in there at the beginning and kept up the intensity throughout the piece.

15. Mar_red - Stranger in Paradise & Love Letters (medley)
I like your piano playing style. You have a nice relaxed style that works well with this medley.

16. Sandy Moore - Hills of Purple Heather
Sandy, I enjoyed this very much – both the song and your performance. I wish it were a bit longer.

29. Monica K. - Quel Che Resta
This is a bit of a departure from your usual “dreamy” tempo pieces but very well played and a delight to listen to – Well done.

47. John Frank - Leaves on the Seine
You do a very good job with this piece. Your playing has a crisp quality and a firmness of touch that is very appealing.

Everybody did such a wonderful job. It's so encouraging to see such a robust and eclectic group of enthusiasts.

I mostly comment on the classical pieces - don't feel slighted though, because I listen to everything while commuting to work for a couple of weeks. I only quit when I can predict which piece is next!

01. jazzyprof - Nocturne op.48 no.1 What a great start to the recital. I know it's difficult, but you made it sound easy.

02. dannylux / Mel - Bersagliera An intriguing and unexpected piece. Enjoyed it very much. It's nice to hear something new and different.

03. epf - Prelude No. 16 in Db Major Very clean and effortless job. I'll have to look up that composer (and you handled the page turn like a pro).

04. Ode2Joy - Piano Sonata in C, K330 Andante cantabile (2nd movement) I love Mozart too, but have a tough time playing his music. Excellent dynamics and control.

05. Ken. - German Dance in A Major, WoO.13, No. 11 Independent hands are hard, and you did a good job with it. Congrats.

06. Mr Super-Hunky - Cristofori's Dream This recital and the previous one you have inspired me - I've got to get some Lanz music and try it.

08. Peyton - Nocturne in Bflat Minor Op.9.1 You make it seem so effortless. Excellent job.

10. kokomo61 - Piano Sonata No. 8 in C minor, Op. 13 Adagio Cantabile Nice job, and the middle section, which seems harder to me was handled very well.

11. flyingfroggy - Nocturne #20 in C# minor (posth.) Ah, the trills! Excellent job.

12. Glen R. - Waltz (Op. 39, No. 15) Isn't the pedal fun? Now you're a real piano player.

13. HomeInMyShoes (HIMS, Homey, Home, Aaron) - Trois Gnossiennes I have never heard these - now I'll have to go look them up. They are very similar, all in the same range and with similar rhythms - and the same mood. I liked #3 the best though.

14. Kalai1/Chris - Leo O Kapo (voice of the night) Sounds impressive for someone who is self taught. Welcome to the ABF recitals!

18. Todd Vance - Sonatina (Clementi, Op. 56 No. 3) Great job Todd - the trills sounded good too. You slowed down a little as you went, but no biggie...

19. Bunneh - Première Gymnopédie I've heard this so many times and never knew what it was. Thanks for sharing.

20. salzdt - Kupelwieser Waltz Welcome to the ABF recitals. Bloopers? What bloopers? Sounded great to me.

22. cscl - Kuhlau Sonatina Op. 55, No. 2, I-II Very nice. Keep this up and you can graduate from sonatinas to sonatas.

23. Schubertian - Hungarian Melody (D817) Very nice. Loved your dynamics and use of the pedal.

25. Carl Mc - Piano Sonata No. 14 OP 27/2 1st Mvt (Moonlight Sonata) Excellent job. I have such trouble playing this softly, and it really needs a light touch all the way through, which you did admirably. You asked for feedback, so - there seems to be some hesitation when you do the melody in the right hand, after the sixteenth note at the end of the measures. The next measure seems delayed a little. Know what I mean? Almost as if you are inserting a small pause. Not sure if that is intentional or if you are concentrating so much on getting the polyrhythm correct that you hesitate a little.

28. Frotz (Brian) - Notturno (Op.54 No.4) You set a wonderful mood with this. Excellent handling of the high climax in the middle and then the slow descent.

31 - Cathy, Senimental Journey. Some lovely touches in there, nice little surprises in tone. Very enjoyable!

Anyway, I havent even got the notes down, so what do I know? I enjoyed this.

Rusty fingers, thankyou so much for your thoughtful comments. I actually agree with you on the pedal. I can be a bit mingy with it. I like to hear space. But sometimes I think I need to be braver and let the sounds melt together.

Btw, that was an acoustic, so no excuses there! smile

55. Musictuary - In The Groove

Perfectly titled - easy to find it with your playing, good job.

56. rustyfingers - Elves' Dance - Elverdans (Alfedanse) - Elfentanz, Lyric Pieces, Op. 12 No. 4.
Great job with the interpretation of this one- I could just feel the mischief in the air! Enjoyed it thoroughly!

57. ddh - Daniel - Polskie Drogi (Polish Roads)
Easy to slip into reflective thought with this one. Mati must have inspired you well, very nice!

58. Serge88 - Greensleeves
Serge88, really enjoyed how simple and pure this starts out and then the advancing complexity of the layers kept me eagerly awaiting the next one. Loved it!

59. LisztAddict - Praeludium BWV 999 in C minor
Quite inspiring... thank you!

60. Larry Larson - atmosphere
Nice! Very interesting composition. Loved the raindrop effect.

61. TTigg / Steve C - Glasgow Love Theme
Nice job Steve. As you continue to grow, so does the complexity and interpretation of your music. Keep it up!

62. steveMac - Prelude Op. 28 No. 7
Well done - you are off to a great start.

63. DragonPianoPlayer - Prelude in E Minor (Op 28 No 4)
DDP, I have started this one several times this year and I get so frustrated with the voicing I have set it aside. I keep thinking I will conquer it and it keeps kicking my ... well you know. You are much further along than I and you have the ending pretty well. A little more pedal in the beginning I think is needed. Good job, it is close.

64. Mark... - Sarabande

Mark, I like this as well. Looks like you are picking things up pretty quickly these days. Nice.

65. Jordy - A Brighter Day
Jordy, that was very good and I liked it a lot. Brighter Day- indeed! Thanks for the submittal.

66. AnthonyB - Exit
Such drama...and you convey it so well. It is a joy to hear you play. I must go take that one around the block one more time! Thank You!

I was a bit lazy getting around to this but here's a youtube playlist where you can watch all the videos that were submitted.

http://www.youtube.com/view_play_list?p=72C1645C209A6E13

On a related note, I just realized that my recital submission didn't link to my video even though I had added that information with an edit. So, just in case anyone wants to watch me play, my piece is at the end of the playlist. smile

The Yamaha UX1 is actually an acoustic piano, the "X" version of the U1, because of the odd X brace in the back. To me it looks more like a * than an X. Here's a picture:

Thanks, Anthony! heart I just added a post to the main recital thread with the link to the playlist, so people in years hence can find it there.

(I would've liked to add the link to the very first post, but the new forum software doesn't let you edit old posts after a few hours or so, so I had to add it as a new post to the end of the thread.)

Thanks much Hunky - Yes, Lanz does indeed have really great stuff to work with - lots of it - I plan to work my way slowly and lovingly through his wonderful catalog - what I fear, however, is someday running out of the great Lanz masterpieces and being stuck with having to resort to somewhat "less preferential", next-to-the-top-shelf New Age material such as that by that Italian fellow, what's his name, Eyenowdee or something... wink laugh

But, there's always Kieko Matsui, who is coming out soon with a songbook...

A standing O (applause) to all who participated, it was truly a magnificent recital. I will certainly continue to recycle whenever possible to absorb all of the wonderful performances.

A sincere "thank you" to all you took time to comment and critique my submission. I have already printed some of those and placed them with my music.

And last, a special recognition to the ones behind the scenes for all of your efforts. This is a very special venue!

#66. Anthony- That's got to be one of my favorite Einaudi pieces so far. The electric piano added a nice touch to the piece.

ShiroKuro,

Thank you for your insight. Very good points to remember and I will explore the exaggeration.
I sometimes do that when things are not going well to release the tension.

16. Sandy Moore - Hills of Purple Heather

Very pretty piece very lovingly played - really enjoyed this and could see myself playing it someday - nice job!

17. b528nf7 (Bill) - Layla

Bill - good vocal/piano work as usual - the harpsicord solo was excellent!

18. Todd Vance - Sonatina (Clementi, Op. 56 No. 3)

Very enjoyable - well played.

19. Bunneh - Première Gymnopédie

Nicely done, but maybe just a little more uptempo?

20. salzdt - Kupelwieser Waltz

Nice effort - needs a little smoothing but you're on the right track.

21. Riddler (Ed) - Easy Living

Excellent work - really like this - maybe a little lengthy - could have used a Billie Holiday vocal break in the middle - but, overall just delightful!

More to follow...

#64. Mark... great effort, especially after only a few weeks. I hadn't heard this before. Very lovely
#61... Steve... I'm not a big fan of "strings", generally just prefer to hear the piece played as piano but you did a very good job. Very lovely.
#59. LisztAddict... Damn you're good....:)

Here's my next batch (and from here on out they'll be slow coming as work seems to be able to get in the way of what I want to do):

31. jotur/Cathy Turner - Sentimental Journey Wow, what a sweet sound! Really well done!

32. Eighty8 - The Summer Knows You have a very nice touch on this. Well played!

33. ten left thumbs - Clair de Lune This was worth waiting for! Outstanding playing, I'm really impressed with this. Any imperfections are simply not worth mentioning!

34. pianonewb - God on the Mountain I kept my eyes closed while listening so your attire didn't matter. Definitely an Appalachian sound to this Gospel piece. Nicely done.

35. Jillian - Morning Prelude This was very nice. You have a nice, gentle touch on the piano. Keep up the good work (chef salad AND french fries -- sounds counter-productive).

36. Always Wanted to Play Piano - Sonatina Op.36 No.1 in C major - 1: Spritoso You managed to catch the "spiritoso" aspect well. A couple of rushed notes, but overall pretty good.

37. mahlzeit - "Up" Theme I don't know what there is to be unhappy about -- this is very nice indeed. Well played, as usual.

38. 1WeekPlayer - Minuet in F major BWV Anh 113 (Notebook for Anna Magdalena Bach) Nicely played with good control overall. Since this is a minuet consider making it a little livelier with more "bounce."

39. Piano Again - Prelude and Fugue in C sharp major, Well-Tempered Clavier Book I Excellent job. You kept the pace nicely throughout each section. Very enjoyable to listen to!

40. CMohr - Mazurka op.67 no. 3 One of the "nice" things about having tinnitus is that tape hiss becomes a thing of the past; I can't hear it anyway. This was played quite competently with the right feel for a mazurka.

Comments like those above really encourage me, especially since I'm so new to piano and this is the kind of music I hope to play. Thank you all very much.

Thanks to everyone who had commented on my piece. Thanks to Dragon for his defintion of what "Cristoforis Dream" is actually about.

Carl, I place the Zoom (H2) on the music stand shelf of the piano. Here's the catch. The Zoom has front and rear mics. Since I am recording so close to the instrument which is being recorded, I face the front mics towards the piano with the rear mics facing away from it. Then I record only from the rear mics!

This works out really well for two reasons. 1.) Since the recorder is very close to my ear, it will record nearly exactly what I hear when I play. This way I can make frequent subtle changes to my playing as I'm playing. Too boomy and I can back off the pedal. Too tinny or harsh and I can ease up on how hard I press the keys and so on.

2.) When only using the rear mics facing away from the piano you tend to get a much more mellow, non-abrasive sound. I actually recorded my piece several times in different positions and always go back to the rear mic setting facing away from the piano while simply putting the Zoom on the treble side of the music shelf. Since high range frequencies ARE directional, you DON'T want to use the front mics facing the piano when using the recorder this close. especially if placing the recorder on the treble side of your shelf. NEVER place the recorder on the bass side of your music shelf as low range frequencies are NOT directional and regardless of using the front or rear mics your recording will come out boomy. Nobody wants that.

Hope this helps. Works for me and my recorder is always within an arms reach without having to get off the bench.

Thanks, it is so clear it sounds like I am on the inside of your piano. I love the sustain and harmonic overtones of your piano.
BTW... the new medal is a nice touch and I am sure worthy laugh

Congratulations to all the performers and a big thank you to Monica for all her hard work. Thank you to all who have commented on my piece. I truly appreciate all the kind comments and technical feedback you’ve given me. I will now use my 999th post on this forum to comment on your pieces!

03. epf - Prelude No. 16 in Db Major What a lovely prelude, very nicely played. And now I can’t get the tune out of my head!

04. Ode2Joy - Piano Sonata in C, K330 Andante cantabile (2nd movement) You did a fine job of playing Mozart and you get such a nice tone out of your C3. Congratulations!

09. Sam Smith - Song Without Words, Opus 19/4 Very effective use of dynamics. Gives the piece a lot of character. Well done!

08. Peyton - Nocturne in Bflat Minor Op.9.1 That was really beautiful. You played this nocturne with great feeling and your piano sounds wonderful.

19. Bunneh - Première Gymnopédie One of my favorite pieces. I love the way you let the music breathe, with a nice lento tempo and good phrasing!

25. Carl Mc - Piano Sonata No. 14 OP 27/2 1st Mvt (Moonlight Sonata) Beautifully played…and you get such a great tone from your Schimmel.

26. Triryche (Rich) - In God's Hands Well done! That piece sounds really good in your hands.

27. Jazzwee - Autumn Leaves - Rhythmic Play A great piece of improvisation with a wonderful rhythmic drive!

33. ten left thumbs - Clair de Lune It’s amazing how you can play so well with ten left thumbs!:) I’ve never been able to finish learning this piece but you’ve inspired me now to plug away at it. Good job!

38. 1WeekPlayer - Minuet in F major BWV Anh 113
(Notebook for Anna Magdalena Bach)
Good job! You’ve accomplished so much in such a short time.

39. Piano Again - Prelude and Fugue in C sharp major, Well-Tempered Clavier Book I Wow, such agile fingers! I like the way you were able to maintain the flow at this fast tempo. On the Fugue have you tried practicing each voice separately? I have never played a fugue but I understand that a good way to give each voice its own character is to work it out separately.

Thanks for your comments on my nocturne! It is a long term project for me so I will continue working on it, especially trying to speed up the last (doppio movimento) section.

40. CMohr - Mazurka op.67 no. 3 Ah, another Chopin lover! You’ve done a good job with this piece. You can take it to an even higher level by imagining the ebb and flow of a dance…

47. John Frank - Leaves on the Seine I think you succeeded in capturing the essential beauty and emotional essence of the piece! Very beautiful playing.

48. TX-Dennis (Dennis Turner) - Suicide Is Painless Wow, this really takes me back to M.A.S.H! Very well done. I like the way you blend the different voices.

51. ShiroKuro - While the Trees Sleep A very musical performance, full of expression and nuance. You have truly mastered this piece!

52. EJR (Elwyn) - "Ich ruf', zu dir, Herr Jesu Christ" [I call on Thee, Lord] BWV 639 What a gorgeous piece, beautifully played! The Pianoteq sounds great…I had no idea a simulated piano could sound so good.

56. rustyfingers - Elves' Dance - Elverdans (Alfedanse) - Elfentanz, Lyric Pieces, Op. 12 No. 4. I could actually see the elves dancing! You play with a very nice touch.

60. Larry Larson - atmosphere A very atmospheric composition! Very interesting piece and I simply love the ending.

61. TTigg / Steve C - Glasgow Love Theme I see you hired an orchestra to back you up!:) Well done!

64. Mark... - Sarabande A very beautiful piece, nicely played. I am impressed that you learnt it in just 2-3 weeks! To take it to an even higher plane you might try a more legato touch and/or a bit more pedal.
