I'd like to hear from all the jazz players what your favourite standards are to play and why. Here's a few of mine:
When I fall in Love Green Dolphin Street Blue in Green Dolphin Dance Never let me go I Remember Clifford My Funny Valentine Round Midnight Nearness of You
I'm usually captivated by the melody of a song first. That's what draws me in. Then the mood and feeling. Keith Jarrett's probably my fav guy for standards, he sets the bar so high, it's fun to try and climb it.

Oz, that's a good list, I like all those standards and have played most of them. I would add:
How Deep Is The Ocean Alone Together If You Could See Me Now Everything Happens To Me LadyBird Wave Watch What Happens
More when I think of them

Wiz, Although I don't fully consider myself a jazz player we seem to have a lot in common. From your list I have When I fall in Love and My Funny Valentine. Here's an incomplete list of some more: Georgia Hymn to Freedom (more bluesy) It Could Happen To You I Got It Bad I Wish I Knew How it WOuld Feel to Be Free In Love In Vain It's All in The Game My Funny Valentine My Song Someone to Watch Over Me Summertime Time On My Hands As you can see I'm also a little partial to KJ. Good topic Wiz. Andy

hey thanks Andy... Jarrett has a way about his playing, even more so than Bill Evans for me. I'm learning So Tender and Moon and Sand off his standards 1 album now.
Good picks by Gershwin too, I like "My Ship" and "The Man I Love". Herbie Hancock has a great record, "Gershwin's World". I've been trying to find his rendition of "Someone...", it's a bonus track on the import but not North American version.
nitekatt... good additions, I haven't heard those songs as much, any artists you recommend I listen to for those ones?
I just thought of a few more, by Jerome Kern:
Way you look Tonite All the Things you are Smoke gets in your Eyes

Conversely, are there some standards that you don't like to play?
Autumn Leaves and Stella by Starlight are 2 that I never took to.

I tend to be a sucker for the haunting ballad: Infant Eyes - Wayner Shorter Time Remembered - Bill Evans Naima - John Coltrane

I'll have a different answer every day for this - my favorites at any given time are generally the ones I'm just learning or rearranging. But I always keep coming back to a few.
Stella by Starlight Giant Steps My Funny Valentine My Favorite Things Maria (and several more from WSS) Waltz for Debbie Sophisticated Lady Prelude to a Kiss
These may not be "Standards" to anybody except Brubeck fans : Strange Meadowlark 40 Days There'll be no Tomorrow
And ... and ... I'd better stop, I'm about to get on a roll ....

If I may, could you folks recommend specific jazz standards piano sheet music books that do justice to what the composer(s) had in mind?
Something in the intermediate/late intermediate/early advanced range?
My to-do list includes Body and Soul, My Foolish Heart, How Deep Is The Ocean, It Might As Well Be Spring, Reflections in D, Prelude to a Kiss, Besame Mucho, etc.
My favorites include those already mentioned, including Evans, Jarrett and Duke. Brad Mehldau may in future years, be viewed with the others.
P.S. And, Diana Krall has chops. Did you catch her on Sundance channel, interviewed by Elton John, playing 'Night Train?'

I've pretty much had enough of the standards that came from the Great American Songbook-- all the stuff that came from musical theater. If I never play "All the Things You Are" again, it will be fine with me.
I'm still very much interested in jazz compositions by jazz composers. ESP Seven Steps to Heaven Infant Eyes Naima Beatrice Dolphin Dance
