I really enjoy reading the comments to the recital. I usually learn something new about pieces from how others respond to them. So I'd like to say thank you to everyone, no matter if you just said you liked them all, or you commented on each one, or somewhere in between. It really is a great part of the recital.

Next installment:

20. salzdt - Kupelwieser Waltz I like how sweet and smooth the right hand notes sound.

21. Riddler (Ed) - Easy Living I really never listen to jazz, but this is nice. I was swaying to this music. The "chime" voice starting about 2 minutes in was surprising.

22. cscl - Kuhlau Sonatina Op. 55, No. 2, I-II Sounds like you have a nice touch. Very pretty.

23. Schubertian - Hungarian Melody (D817) Cool piece! I like the rhythm. You did a great job. Thanks also for the background information on it.

24. kawaigirl1 - Like the wind You played this with such feeling!

25. Carl Mc - Piano Sonata No. 14 OP 27/2 1st Mvt (Moonlight Sonata) Love the sound of your piano and love this Beethoven piece. I could almost feel those gorgeous notes resonating!

26. Triryche (Rich) - In God's Hands Very meditative. This is this first I've heard of David Nevue. Nice.

27. Jazzwee - Autumn Leaves - Rhythmic Play Haven't heard your other Autumn Leaves versions, but I did like this one -- thought it was really interesting.

28. Frotz (Brian) - Notturno (Op.54 No.4) I don't mind the interruptions. I feel like I'm sitting in your living room, enjoying a private recital. Thank you!

29. Monica K. - Quel Che Resta It sounds difficult, but you play it with such confidence. Beautifully done!

30. Copper - Air I like this short and simple piece.

31. jotur/Cathy Turner - Sentimental Journey I love the rhythm you've got going there, and I had to smile at the end. I bet the adults that you play for really enjoy this.

32. Eighty8 - The Summer Knows Sad and sweet. You played this well.

33. ten left thumbs - Clair de Lune Just lovely! I'm looking forward to learning this after I learn a couple of Debussy's preludes.

34. pianonewb - God on the Mountain It's hard enough just playing a song, much less doing vocals at the same time. Congratulations.

35. Jillian - Morning Prelude Nice job using the pedal Jillian. Have fun with everything you're learning!

36. Always Wanted to Play Piano - Sonatina Op.36 No.1 in C major - 1: Spritoso Oh, another Clementi Sonatina! I love playing this one and enjoyed listening to yours.

37. mahlzeit - "Up" Theme Wow -- I admire your ability to transcribe that by ear.

38. 1WeekPlayer - Minuet in F major BWV Anh 113 (Notebook for Anna Magdalena Bach) Nice playing, especially at 12 months!

(more later)

Thanks much - yes, a beautiful piece of music that really inspired me (probably enough to "play above myself").

Here's the original performed by the composer set to a lovely photo slide show of scenes along the Seine:

For the ones I put up on YouTube I use Windows Movie Maker. I do NOT use the software that came with the camera. I use Audacity to convert the wave file from the H4 to mp3 and then merge that into the video in movie maker.

The trick there is to use the magnifying glass to expand the time line as much as possible, then align the peaks in the audio from the video with the imported mp3 audio. You will then still have to adjust the imported audio a little bit one way or the other. With a little experience this can be done very quickly. But I will tell you the first couple of times I probably spent a good five minutes getting it to where I liked it.

First, I would like to thank Monica and Malzheit for the time and effort put in to make this recital so successful. The range of pieces is remarkable and the level of playing is excellent. I wanted to comment on those that took the time to respond to my piece and thank everyone who listened.

03. epf - Prelude No. 16 in Db Major

EPF, really nice balance between the left and right hand. Your slowing down and speeding up was very effective I thought. Is that called retardando and accelerando? I’m not sure, but it was well done. I liked this piece very much.

04. Ode2Joy - Piano Sonata in C, K330 Andante cantabile (2nd movement)

Really wonderful. Your accents were superb. I always felt that the slow movements of Mozart’s sonatas were equally as challenging as the allegros. Your interpretation was excellent. Especially the shading in certain sections. Truly marvelous.

12. Glen R. - Waltz (Op. 39, No. 15)

This is one of my favorites, Glen. It should be played straight forward as you have done. A very clean performance. Your touch was excellent.

13. HomeInMyShoes (HIMS, Homey, Home, Aaron) - Trois Gnossiennes

Homey, I’m not very familiar with Satie, but these have kind of a jazz rhythm to them. The way the accents fall. The melodies are very unusual as well. They sound tricky to play, but you did great. Do you dabble in jazz at all?

17. b528nf7 (Bill) - Layla

Definitely one of my all time favorites, Bill. This “unplugged” version is great. You kept that kind of bluesy feel to it which I like. Wow! What a surprise when you threw in the piano “exit” from the original version. Wonderful stuff.

21. Riddler (Ed) - Easy Living

Ed, this is my kind of music. I don’t think I’ve heard it. Definitely worthy of any piano bar I’m familiar with. A nice and relaxed style you have. Smooth as can be. Loved the vibraphone for a change of pace. Cool all around.

25. Carl Mc - Piano Sonata No. 14 OP 27/2 1st Mvt (Moonlight Sonata)

Carl, this piece is so challenging as far as getting the dynamics right. You did great with that. The diminuendos and crescendos were artfully done. I think your pacing was quite good as well. Just a few notes here and there were off, but excellent work.

26. Triryche (Rich) - In God's Hands

I liked the steady forward motion of this piece. It was very calming and pleasant to the ear. Well done.

27. Jazzwee - Autumn Leaves - Rhythmic Play

Jazzwee, Great improv! You can really feel the proper sequencing of downbeat and upbeat here to capture the swing as you’ve been explaining on the AL thread. You’re using those chord tones in this piece correct? Loved this – will download for later jamming purposes. Thanks, man.

31. jotur/Cathy Turner - Sentimental Journey

Another great piece from my type of music, Carthy. I don’t think I ever heard the intro to this. Great work on the base. You have great command of the syncopation. Snazzy ending. Good work.

39. Piano Again - Prelude and Fugue in C sharp major, Well-Tempered Clavier Book I

I think as far as execution, degree of difficulty, and technique, this for me is one of the best performances in the recital. Just beautifully played. I loved it. Takes me back to my feeble attempts at the WTC. Bravo!

40. CMohr - Mazurka op.67 no. 3

These pieces of Chopin you very rarely hear now. Everyone wants to play the more popularized repertoire. I love the Mazurkas for their simple and charming melodies. Terrific work on this one. The melody comes through nicely and you held on to that quirky rhythm very well.

47. John Frank - Leaves on the Seine

John, I definitely think this is your best recital piece that I’ve heard. Very melodic and your rests were artfully placed. Good work on those thirds as well. It was really a delight.

48. TX-Dennis (Dennis Turner) - Suicide Is Painless

I know there was a lot of discussion as to where this theme came from. When I heard it I thought, wow that’s so cool, it’s Mash! I loved this piano version of the piece. You really did a lot with it. I liked the syncopated style very much.

49. Undone - Theme from “The Unfinished Symphony”

You really did a lot with this theme. You used the whole keyboard it seemed and created a lot of dynamic changes. Very nicely done. Great work playing the theme in your left hand. That can be tough.

56. rustyfingers - Elves' Dance - Elverdans (Alfedanse) - Elfentanz, Lyric Pieces, Op. 12 No. 4.

Nice light touch on the keys which you need for this piece. I loved the contrasting voice in the left hand. It really gives a “conversational” quality to the piece. It seems like you must have had fun playing this. Well done.

61. TTigg / Steve C - Glasgow Love Theme

I try not to use clichés too often, but this piece was definitely hauntingly beautiful. Your technique on the keys was perfect for the song. At first I thought the background strings were a distraction, but ultimately they fit perfectly with the theme.

65. Jordy - A Brighter Day

I’m not familiar with this song, but I enjoyed your playing very much. You worked up very nicely to the first crescendo. Good balance between the left and right hands. I think your range of dynamics was perfect.

Great work everyone.

Thanks so much, Glen, Mark, Triryche and Manndrew!
I chose this mazurka not only because I really like the melody, but for my first recital I had to do a short piece - I wouldn't have been able to hold my "red dot" nerves together for more than 2 minutes!

Yes, those terms are appropriate. However, in this piece the composer has noted several ritardandos after which one resumes the normal tempo so accelerando doesn't really apply -- that would mean to speed up the normal tempo.

44. Euan Morrison – Galaxy 2 Steinway sounds great

45. joangolfing – This was my first piece recorded using my Zoom H2 and an acoustic piano. I set the mic gain too high and should have had it on low. I just started learning the 2nd section, Andante.

Yes, I had some help securing the last spot. Besides, I don't think it would have been a good piece for an early recital entry anyways.

Congrats on post 500, btw. smile

This piece was one of the first pieces I was horsing around with before taking up piano seriously. It was a much simpler version. Thanks Mark, and sure you can use it in the book 3 thread. As a matter of fact, I have this up on BoxNet, was planning to add a few more of my recent book 3 pieces this weekend, and then let you know about them.

Joanngolfing and Manndrew, thank you sooooo much for you compliments. I composed this song and am currently working on a few others. I've had so many positive responses on this website that I want to create a cd for my family and friends.

I tried to convert the midi to a score, but it's too hard. This recording also has NO editing, cause I don't know how to. I came up with this song in a few hours and worked on it and it developed into this. I've always been told to play "my music" but I never knew what that was until recently. I must say that I'm very surprised that my emphasis is naturally on melody, but am very pleased. When I let go and let "my" music come out, melodies are ALWAYS the emphasis. My next song is named "Closer To You" and again, very melodic. I thought I was going to play more new age style, but like I said, am very, very surprised and am happy with what's coming out.

Thank you again everyone...I truly am humbled.

Hello Everyone,

I just got around to listening to all the recital entries this afternoon and tonight. I thoroughly enjoyed listening to all the entries.

Listening to the many beautiful selections that were played was truly an inspirational experience. I'm even more motivated to continue on my piano journey. It can be lonely at times as an adult piano student but listening to the wonderful selections in this recital has made me realize I'm in great company. I am certainly looking forward to Recital #17.

Thanks to all who listened and/or commented on my submission - "In The Groove."

Musictuary

PS - I received a merit(127 out of 150) in the ABRSM Grade 5 exam. I am currently preparing for Grade 6. I plan to share some of the Grade 6 selections in future recitals.

Next installment:

39. Piano Again - Prelude and Fugue in C sharp major, Well-Tempered Clavier Book I I'm impressed -- those fingers are really going!

40. CMohr - Mazurka op.67 no. 3 Your grace notes are very pretty and delicate.

41. grotrianer - La plus que lente You tell a story with this performance. Well done!

42. Andy Mann - Manndrew - Time On My Hands I think my blood pressure just dropped by a few points -- how soothing!

43. Yamaha G3 & P-80 Mike White - Military Polonaise Op 40. No. 1 nice strong beat brings out the strength of this piece

44. Euan Morrison - I'm Going to Make a Cake Oh yes! I can see why you like this. I'm drawn to this too, for its repetitive simplicity and slight chords changes. (I've just been introduced to Arvo Part's music, and I sense some similarities.)

45. joangolfing - Italian Concerto (Presto movement) a lovely Bach piece. I don't mind the slower tempo at all -- my ear can follow it! smile

46. bluekeys - Invention #4 nice! What other inventions have you played? (I've only learned #1 so far.) Do you still have your Charles Walter?

47. John Frank - Leaves on the Seine I don't know why, but this made me feel achingly nostalgic. It was beautiful.

48. TX-Dennis (Dennis Turner) - Suicide Is Painless Only 10 takes on your first-choice piece? That's not nearly enough to get frustrated over. smile What was the other piece, BTW? Or will we hear it at the next recital? Anyway, this was a good alternate. You played it well.

49. Undone - Theme from ìThe Unfinished Symphonyî Some tricky rhythms here. Good job.

50. GregF - Sleeping Through September Your left-hand chords give nice support to the melody.

51. ShiroKuro - While the Trees Sleep pretty and pleasing. It draws you in.

52. EJR (Elwyn) - "Ich ruf', zu dir, Herr Jesu Christ" [I call on Thee, Lord] BWV 639 Your playing emphasized the organ influence in this music.

53. Mateusz 'Mati' Papiernik - Tooi hi no Kizuato You played this passionately.

55. Musictuary - In The Groove fun little piece.

(hoping to finish the rest tomorrow.)

Ha! My first ever Bravo! Thanks Mark - this means a lot coming from the founder and guiding light of the Alfred threads, who is making himself into quite a piano player too!

Thanks much MaryBee - I must respect the opinion of anyone who even remotely enjoys the singing of the Norman Luboff Choir thumb Nostalgic to listen to? Yes, in a sort of sunny September day sort of way. But more than nostalgic to play - more like a serene kind of joy...

52. EJR (Elwyn) - "Ich ruf', zu dir, Herr Jesu Christ" [I call on Thee, Lord] BWV 639
Very nice piece and nicely played. Any chance of you rendering this as an organ? WoW! You sure do keep a detailed practice log!

53. Mateusz 'Mati' Papiernik - Tooi hi no Kizuato
Beautiful piece played beautifully! Definitely pulls the heartstrings. And the Garritan sounds awesome. Touching little background on the piece selection.

54. MaryBee - Reverie
WoW! Another very touching piece played very beautifully. Well done!

55. Musictuary - In The Groove
Nice groovy little piece! I am not familiar with this piece but it sounds like you make it swing quite well!

56. rustyfingers - Elves' Dance - Elverdans (Alfedanse) - Elfentanz, Lyric Pieces, Op. 12 No. 4.
Nicely played! It sounds like a very technically demanding piece, but I can here your jolliness come thru!

57. ddh - Daniel - Polskie Drogi (Polish Roads)
Another very pretty and touching piece. Great playing!

58. Serge88 - Greensleeves
I love David’s arrangement of this. And you play it beautifully. Great job of those big LH arps! The NI sounds great too.

59. LisztAddict - Praeludium BWV 999 in C minor
Beautiful piece and playing! Love the descending run. Bravo!

60. Larry Larson - atmosphere
Awesome composition and playing! Which PortaStudio do you have, just curious?

61. TTigg / Steve C - Glasgow Love Theme
Awesome playing! Especially for only a little over a year. The subtle use of the strings is a nice touch! Can’t wait to hear more great stuff form you!

62. steveMac - Prelude Op. 28 No. 7
WoW! 6 months! Awesome job! And not awesome for 6 months, awesome job period. I still haven’t the courage to tackle a Chopin piece!

63. DragonPianoPlayer - Prelude in E Minor (Op 28 No 4)
I am not qualified to offer technical feedback, but Great playing! It’s obvious you put a lot of time into this piece. One of these days I’ll muster up the courage to play Chopin.

64. Mark... - Sarabande
Interesting piece and awesome playing! IMHO opinion, saying this fell into place pretty well is a bit of an understatement. Great recording too. I think I will have to look into his works

65. Jordy - A Brighter Day
Awesome composition and playing! What more can I say?
Except, Motif XS **Drools** !!

66. AnthonyB - Exit
(last piece, nice touch! wink )
I was working on this piece for the recital, but wasn’t even close to having it ready. Awesome playing! Your dynamics really brings out the emotions of this piece that I fell in love with.

thumb Thank you very much for the kind words of inspiration. I credit my talent to some of genetics (GGGrandFather) but seriously, MOYD RULES! It it were not for the everyday practice (be it scales, Hanon, just tinkering) I don't think I'd be anywhere near as progressed as I am.

I'm certainly looking forward to putting more videos out there to share, we have "quite the crowd" for sure.. !

Last set:

56. rustyfingers - Elves' Dance - Elverdans (Alfedanse) - Elfentanz, Lyric Pieces, Op. 12 No. 4. I can just hear those little feet skipping around. smile

57. ddh - Daniel - Polskie Drogi (Polish Roads) peaceful and lyrical

58. Serge88 - Greensleeves One of my favorite melodies. I love the accompanying harmonies in this version.

59. LisztAddict - Praeludium BWV 999 in C minor I like the effect with the pedal. Very intense.

60. Larry Larson - atmosphere Nice piece. It just flows.

61. TTigg / Steve C - Glasgow Love Theme Cool string effects. Sounds very Enya-like to me.

62. steveMac - Prelude Op. 28 No. 7 Nice job. A while ago I tried playing through this piece a couple times, but didn't get it to this level.

63. DragonPianoPlayer - Prelude in E Minor (Op 28 No 4) Oh! I love it when I hear a piece that I really know. This was the 3rd piece I worked on when I started lessons. I didn't like it at first, but my teacher said it would be "good for me", and it was my introduction to phrasing and dynamics and rubato. It's good to hear it again.

64. Mark... - Sarabande Pretty piece. I enjoyed listening.

65. Jordy - A Brighter Day This is a keeper - I love it! 3hearts It just made me feel really good. I like how you bring out that sweet melody, and the chords fill it out so well.

66. AnthonyB - Exit oooh, moody, especially with those rumbling bass notes starting about halfway in. Beautifully played.

Thanks so much to everyone for sharing your music! I'm so glad I was a part of this recital. I heard some different styles of music that I don't usually listen to, notably new age and jazz. I was introduced to several composers: David Lanz, Philip Glass, David Nevue, Einaudi. I heard some great players, whose keyboard skills I can aspire to. I have some pieces I want to try playing myself (Vandall's Prelude #16, Clair de Lune, maybe Nevue's Greensleeves). And I definitely have to go out and buy a CD of Chopin's Nocturnes, because the ones I heard here were so beautiful!
