Thanks to everyone for input about Petrof and Kawai pianos. As I suspected, it mostly comes down to both individual taste and instruments. I do have one more request for information. What about comparison of Bechstein Acadamy and Petrof grands? Any input will really be appreciated. Also, how do these European pianos compare to a new Steinway B? Thanks Ansley

I am not familiar with Petrofs but played a number of Bechstein Acadamies during my search. They seemed really well built and I like the touch/feel of them a lot. The sound is much "clearer" than a Steinway. More fundamental I guess. I don't think you'll have much difficulty determining which type of sound you prefer. Night and day to me. The A190's I looked at were approximately 1/2 the price of a Steinway B. But again, it is hard to believe the same person would love the sound of both. So you wouldn't choose it on price. A Bosie or AF lover, for example, might (??).

Thanks for the reply. I went to a local dealer today. There was a Steinway B about 8 years old. It was probably one of the most disapointing pianos I have played. Extremely dull, no real color and a very stiff action. It is on consignment, and I know that it has recently been worked on. I then went back and played 2 Petrofs and 2 Bechsteins. There is no comparison between the two. If you couldn't hear them back to back, you probably wouldn't be so aware of the difference. If I decide to get another piano, it will be the Bechstein. Ansley
