Actually I had both links for several days and just edited it today and missed the second link. Here's the second link http://www.guitarcenter.com/KRK-Rokit-Powered-8-Generation-2-104908686-i1401614.gc Eternal, not sure what you meant by garbage in garbage out, but it doesn't sound very nice.

Hi Oxfords Gal, A few months ago, i tested several powered monitors. Here is the article: http://www.pianoworld.com/ubb/ubb/ultimatebb.php?/topic/6/4704.html#000010

Hi Oxford Gal, I think that the KRK ones are the best. KRK have a better reputation for sound quality than M-Audio, because KRK have an established range of studio monitors going up to very expensive large professional models, whereas M-Audio are only in the budget market. Both the nearfield models you've shortlisted are quite similar bi-amped active designs with 8 inch woofer and tweeter. The major physical design difference is the KRK have their reflex port (bass air vent letterbox hole) at the front whereas M-Audio design has it at the rear panel with a round hole. Therefore if you're planning to position your speakers somewhere near a back wall or in a tight space, you'd probably be better off with the forward firing KRK vents, as the rear vent airflow of M-Audio could be restricted, although on free standing speaker stands in a large room, rear vents can sound good. If you want to look very closely at the specs, the M-Audio BX8a has a few slight advantages like lower extended bass freq response to 40Hz rather than KRK's 45Hz (if you actually believe that!), and higher input impedance of 20K ohms rather than 10K ohm (KRK) which can help signal quality a little bit. On the other hand, the KRK has about 8% more power in watts overall (but that doesn't mean much unless you know its sensitivity rating which isn't quoted.) Also it has curved edges to the cabinet corners which helps the high frequency diffraction acoustic properties for such a small cabinet like that. Each speaker has some pros and cons. If you can't afford to make a wrong decision, then you must go visit the music store and take with you some CDs of music you know really well of various different types (RnB / classical / jazz), and maybe some recordings of yourself playing your Yamaha S90 piano sounds, and ask for a side-by-side demo of those two speakers, and listen carefully for yourself. Make sure the volume is the same from each speaker for fair comparison, but don't forget to crank them up to see how loud they could go, before overloading distortion! (I think KRK will go loudest with least distortion.) Also ask if you can compare listening to either of these directly against a known reference high quality playback, from a very expensive professional monitor speaker of similar size, like Dynaudio BM12A or Genelec 8050A , so that you have some idea what possible target you're ideally aiming for, and pick whichever sounds closest to that as the safest option. Best wishes, propianist

Hey Oxfords Gal,
I own a pair of BX8-A's which I had bought to amplify my MP8. I was immediately disappointed with them, as their bass is far too boomy for a digital grand to sound realistic. So I bought a pair of Behringers B2031A's (some 245 watts each instead of 130, by the way), which make my ears completely happy. These speakers are snubbed by many but they sure don't deserve it. They're absolutely great.
The M-Audios have been transfered to DVD duty, where they sound fantastic for movie watching. They're very good generally, though not at all ideal for a DP.
Regards,
Claude

Bought the behringers truths, they came in yesterday. I love them. Recorded this and set up the zoom h4 about 6 feet from them http://www.box.net/shared/iiz0bdqy49 I'm quite happy with them. Thanks for the advice

Well, enjoy! Didn't want to sound like I was trying to influence you too much, but you sure made the right choice. Mine sit atop the digital piano, about 3½ feet apart at a slight angle (±30°), and boy, do they deliver! Never a trace of distortion from these. Plus, I found the ideal volume control setting, as I have my acoustic grand sitting about 8 feet away. I never vary the volume anymore, as it's been adjusted using a db meter to deliver the same output as the acoustic piano, no more, no less. Very realistic, and ideal for two-piano music making, as I'm busy with these days...
Regards,
Claude

Oh no worries Bach. They couldn't be any worse than the ones I had the rokit 5's. I was torn between the three and just tossed a coin.
The piano sounds will never sound good, I've noticed that but the other voices sound great. Not sure why that is.
I've listened to people on youtube with monitors and the piano sounds fantastic but when you get their information it's the 800-1000 equipment which I don't want to pay.
Maybe I have to play with stuff but I'm not savvy enough but I'm ok with these.

I'm mostly using a Gem Promega 3, which sounds very natural through the monitors. I looked at the KRK RP8's but was lucky enough to find the V8s for a good price. It's important, as bachmaniac suggests, to place the monitors well as these monitors are intended for near field listening. Mine are set at ear height.

There are some kevlar Behringer B3030A with decent price (lower Watts). Does anyone know how well they compare to the old B2031A?
