I know the CN42 is the newer model and it has a few more features but the music shop wants around $2600 for the CN42 but says they'll sell me the CN41 at a significant discount to make room. I don't have a price yet but do you think the differences between the two models are that significant?

str1der,

I believe the following table may assist your decision making process:

Comparing the CN41 and CN42, the most significant improvement is the Progressive Harmonic Imaging sound technology, allowing for a far more progressive expressive sound.

The CN41 is a very good instrument, however my preference would almost certainly be the more modern CN42.

I hope this helps.

Kind regards,
James

EDIT: fixed a typo - expressive, not progressive.

James thanks for the info. Can you explain what the difference is in the Progressive harmonic imaging? What kind of real difference do you hear that isn't just marketing hype?

What would you consider a good price for the CN41? I live near Cincinnati, Oh.

CN-41 does not have 88 key sampling. The CN-42 is superior in both sound and touch, and the cabinet is is upgraded. IF you like the CN-42 more, buy that one. You will not regret it. Good luck.

str1der, to echo Stephen's sentiments above, the CN42 is undoubtedly superior to the CN41 in every way.

The new 88-key piano sampling process alone would be an improvement over the CN41's original Harmonic Imaging sound technology, however the fact that the CN42 utilises the 'Progressive' version of Harmonic Imaging adds extra dimensions of expressiveness to the sound.

The improved sound generation technology is further enhanced by the presence of additional tweeter speakers, helping to sweeten the sound.

If at all possible, I would ask the dealer in question to place the CN41 and CN42 side-by-side, allowing you to compare the two instruments directly. It should quickly become apparent that the CN42 is a significant improvement over the previous generation model - indeed, the same is also true of the CN32 and CN22, albeit to a lesser extent.

On a personal note, I have to say that the CN42 Premium Mahogany is undoubtedly my favourite KAWAI digital piano - the cabinet and finish looks terrific.

I hope this helps.

Kind regards,
James
